cant check e-mail with new wireless router

I recieved they Netgear WGT624 for christmas. my parents are plugged into the first port of the router and when they try to use microsoft outlook express it brings up a message box saying it can not contact the server. but when they plug their computer directly into the modem they have no problems but of course doing that makes the wireless router useless. I was told I should come here and ask the question. so does anyone here know what im supposed to do?

Stupid question, but did you plug the modem into the uplink port on the router, then put the hard wired computer in one of the four ports?

yes I did plug the wires in all the correct ports. I have been trying to ping the incoming and outgoing servers but a message comes up saying that they are not actual servers.

So you're seeing just "mail", "pop", or "smtp" like the article refers to?

Alright I got it. I had to plug their computer directly into the modem to be able to ping the servers. thank you for puting up with my stupid questions i apreciate it.
