Can't change resolution in Win 98 - Please help!

I posted something like this the other day. I have a customer who claims her icons are huge and she cannot get to display settings because of this to change the res. She reboots in safe mode (WIn 98) and makes the change, but then when she reboots normally, it reverts back and she gets the huge icons.

Any more ideas?

I think you can go to control panel and then go to display properties. On there, click on the Effect tab then unclick the Use Large Icon. Hope that's what you want.

Doesn't work. My problem is that the resolution is stuck at 640x480 and I cannot change it. The windows are all way out of proportion to the screen and cannot be moved enough to get to where I change the settings. I reboot in safe mode and the desktop shows up properly but when I go to settings, I can't move the bar which changes the resolution. This computer is running Windows 98.

Any other suggestions? Can the settings for resolution be changed in the registry somewhere? This doesn't seem like it should be this difficult...

Try updating the drivers for the video card. If you're using drivers labeled something along the lines of "Standard Display Adapter" or simply "Display Adapter" rather than the actual card that's in there, it may not allow resolutions to go above 640x480.

That's the only thing I can think of.

Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager -> Display Adapters to see the driver name.

I will try that. Actually, when I put the res settings in my taskbar and then let it pop up, it tells me the resolution is set to 320x240 and that is the only option!

Sometimes after a clean install of 98 i used to have this problem... Change the monitor drivers in device manager... it's probably set to Standard VGA or SVGA @ 648x480... just make it something like 1024x768 or 1280x1024 unless you know the exact max on the monitor.

Hope that helps

EDIT: 320x240!?! I didn't think windows could go that low... somethings definitely FUBAR

Okay, I figured it out...

In safe mode I go into display properties, settings, advanced and check off the box next to show settings icon on taskbar and apply it. Reboot into normal mode and the icon shows up on the taskbar. When I moved the mouse over it, it displayed a popup box with the 320x240 res in it. I then double-click on the icon in the task bar and it THEN shows all possible resolutions. I just select off 800x600 and the screen redisplays with the proper resolution.

Now I happen to have another problem...

Whenever I reboot (warm or cold), the Microsoft Windows 98 startup menu (you know, the one with 5 choices - normal, safemode, dos, etc...) comes up automatically. How do I stop it from doing this and just boot into windows?

click >>start>run
Type msconfig
Choose the advanced box in the bottom right above apply(which is greyed out)
About half way down you will see Enable Startup Menu, if there is a check remove it, if not put one in restart, go into windows, repeat above, then remove the check and restart.

This should take care of it for you,
Grim
