I can digitally increase the volume ( go into sound setting/itunes etc ), but when i turn the analog knob i cant past half way before i start hearing a low farting sound from my sub and a high pitch sound from the 2 side speakers. Kind of fail, i remember me turning the knob all the way and being able to hear them across my house =/

Do you guys know of any programs that could digitally increase4 the volume?

That farting sound is most likely due to a blown driver.

actually they are sh*tty speakers;)
altec lansing isn't known for making quality computer speakers. you dont get somethin for nothing, and with drivers like that built for looks rather than sound i'm not surprised it sounds like garbage.

Yes the plastic MADE IN CHINA junk they sell today is nothing like the past, the REAL ALTEC!

I think it's more like Altec decided to leave that market because it's dominated by JBL and Klipsch.

Darn AL haters! I'm on my second set of their computer speakers (first set handed down to dad). I have the Altec Lansing MX5021.

The speakers take up some space but the set gets LOUD and does not distort. I love em.

As a musician and techie dealing with pro audio every day we usually frown on anything that does not stare back at us with horns of authority! :p

Most of our gigs are covered by EV, Peavey, and EAW. You don't see many Klipsch monitors on stage. JBL is there too but we don't own any. Their horns are OK but I much prefer EV's sound.

Of course in the home such builds can be ugly. Oh but it's about the sound, right? ;)

Those speakers probably sound very nice and should be quite satisfactory for their intended use and price range. Computer speakers are definitely in a league of their own which we don't care for much. ;)

It's not so much about getting loud sound as about getting good sound, although having headroom for loud obviously doesnt hurt. I'm not too sure about your claim that they don't distort, as i have owned 3 pairs of different altec lansing 2.1 speakers, and while none of them have been bad choices for the price, they sure distort at high volumes.

Those MX5021s were OK...nothing special, and the pre-amp noise was attrocious.

It's got nothing on the x21s that Altec Lansing made--still the pinnacle of PC audio, unless you consider the $900 Klipsch ALX 5.1s actually PC speakers.
