Cant afford 88GTS, whats the ranking for 7 series

Hi all, I have decided the 86GTS is pants, and the 88GTS just costs too much considering its only for games.

The 7 series, though not the best IQ, is alot cheaper, so I reckon on getting 1 of those. Trouble is I'm now confused with the order of speed between GTO's, GT's and blah blah.

Anyone have a quick run down from top to mid range....

I think if I'd have to choose between G70 and R500/520/580 I'd go with ATi. The X1K series is an excellent generation of cards.

The top of the 7 series was the 7950GX2. Next up were the factory overclocked 512MB 7950GTs.

I tried the x1950pro, had to buy another psu to power it then discovered it was a dud card in the 1st place. I'll stay away from the ATI cards for now. Only disappointment is the 7 series IQ, isnt as good as either the ATI or 8 series..I'm thinking of the 7900GT.

Hate to say it but your logic is bit faulty, because both manufacturers have occasional duds among them and god forbid theres even been large scale manufacturing errors on some series of cards.

I would also consider that 7xxx series are no longer manufactured and their support is going to end very soon, if it alrdy has not. Last time I checked it took Nvidia about 6 months to update their 7xxx serier drivers, could be wrong about that, but remember reading so. But if you got a killer deal on that 7900GT, Iam not saying its a bad choice, just worse than 1950xt/1950pro and thats only a opinion.

The 7 series is no longer manufactured. I recently RMA'd my 7900GT CO Superclocked to EVGA and the first thing they sent me was an 8600GTS. I wasn't happy with that and they sent me a recertified 512MB 7950GT KO Superclocked. Nice upgrade. It still carries the full lifetime warranty and if it dies, I can RMA it and get a new card. If you can find an EVGA 7950GT I'd get one of those. EVGA's warranty and RMA department are excellent. Recently, someone here on AT RMA'd his 7950GT to EVGA and got an 8800GTX back.

I'm in NZ mate, so we are abit slower with the product cycles and price drops, 88GTX = NZD$1200, 7900GT = $363, 86GTS = $330, 7950GT = $403

I really would look at the X1k ATI cards, they were much better performers the GF 7 series. Both product lines are likely going to cease being manufactured soon though. Apparently the 7 series already had, but some of the X1k cards will continue to be made for a while longer, at least until the X2K lines fill the market segments.

The only time my 1900XT was noisy was during the initial fan test during POST. After that, it rarely spun up unless I was in a game that required it. In which case, I couldn't hear the card over the sound of the game.

My 2900XT is a slightly different story. The fan spins up to full speed during POST, though it has a slightly muddier sounding fan than that 1900XT. Also, during simple use in windows, the fan will spin up and its easily noticeable. Again, when gaming though, the sound masks the sound of the fan entirely.

Take this with a grain of salt though, the place I work at has many loud fans running all day. Working there for 4 years, I'd be surprised if I didn't have some hearing loss in certain ranges.

The Ati x1900 cards were often more noisy and consumed more power than comparable 7-series cards, however it's a fact that they were faster and had better features. Also, right now the x1900 cards cost less than comparable 7-series cards. The 7950gt and the 7900gs are still decent cards for the money, but you'd end up paying more and getting less than you could have with x1900 and x1950 cards.

Check the prices for X1900XTX or X1950XT 256mb. If those are close to 7950GT/7900GT, I'd get those cards instead. They have superior anisotropic filtering (i.e. Geforce 7 has a shimmering texture issue).

You guys are comparing USA prices, as I said, I'm in NZ. The X1900xtx is NZD $636 here, the 7950GT = $403. While the X1 is faster by 5-10%, its 30% more expensive.

Besides, I just dont like ATI cards.....period.

Edit - If I could afford $600, I'd get the 88GTS

I have a 7950GT 256mb that I use at 1680X1050 and I have no issues with it.
