Just bought a Linksys wireless router(WRT54G) and set up my work laptop. But when I'm connected to VPN, I can't seem to access the internet. When I disconnect VPT it seems to work fine.

I checked on Linksys' website but couldn't find any answers.

This is normal behavior.

Most VPN servers default to "Do Not Allow Split Tunnelling" (able to connect outside the pipe); it's considered a security risk.

As the person in control of the server / other endpoint to allow split tunneling.

Most / many companies will allow you to surf, but it's through the company connection & firewall (something they can trust). Of course, corporate rules are also usually in place (no spanky.com).

Good Luck

Scott

Thanks ScottMac for your help.

I'm using Nortel's Contivity VPN Client. I guess i cant access for security reasons, since I can access the internet at work but I can't access the internet when i'm connected to vpn at home.

Is this a work laptop perhaps? If so are you on the company domain (windows)? If so you may have GPO's in place to auto configure your proxy settings when you do logon at work. Something that wouldn't be pushed out to you when using cached credentials at home. However the proxy settings are maintained on my company laptop until I manually uncheck them when at the house. Something to consider however.

It's probably this way by default, but make sure all the traffic is routed through the tunnel.

you can try in the router settings, *use computer mac address( your laptop in this case), or contact the network administrator

This is common security practice for VPNs.

Prevents you from being a proxy/zombie.

good IT guys...they get a pat on the head.

Thanks for the help guys. I wasn't sure if it was my router's configuration or if it was set up that way for security purposes by IT. Looks like it's IT.
