In a story first reported by KLAS-TV in Las Vegas with details later provided by TMZ Sports, former baseball player Jose Canseco shot himself in the left hand while cleaning his handgun at home in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

According to TMZ Sports, Canseco blew the middle finger off his hand. Canseco's fiancee told TMZ Sports he was sitting at a table in their home cleaning the gun when it went off, apparently not knowing the gun was loaded.

DUH.

In instances such as this, does it become illegal to own a firearm for him? It should... He's a danger to himself and everyone around him.

What kind of moron cleans a loaded weapon?

Lucky he did not kill himself or somebody else.

that's almost as stupid as the vid of the idiot who was shooting in the woods and the rifle misfired and he decides to look down the barrel and almost blows his head off.

I just don't get how people who own firearms ever let this kind of thing happen.

"didn't know it was loaded"

You didn't check before you started cleaning? You always visually inspect and clear a weapon, even when taking it out of storage just to carry it or whatever. It's basically Rule #1.

I mean, I do get it, because humanity never ceases to amaze me with how much stupidity any single human may express, but still...

How is he ever going to go through life without fighting Shaq now? His ego will never recover. Does he think he can win without a punching hand?

Right? I store mine on the floor with stray bullets on the ground and you never know if one of those damn kids wasn't playing with it and trying to see what happens when you put the pretty pointy thing in the boom boom tube

Agreed completely. I know a surgeon who put a bullet through his hand when cleaning his handgun. Yep, a seasoned surgeon, shot himself in the hand. Wouldn't you think he'd be a bit more careful than even the average gun owner?

I call bullshit.

He was probably wild-west swinging his gun around, it got loose in the air, he tried to grab it with both hands, and that's when he shot off his finger.

Because 'who doesn't unload a gun before cleaning it'? Nobody. The first step is always to remove the mag and any bullet that was chambered, before you disassemble it.
