Canoscan Toolkit software issue

Quick question for anyone who knows this Canon Scanner software.
From one day to the next, the Toolkit software no longer sees anything but my 'Home' and Desktop folders to save scans to? I used to be able to save to any folder on the computer. Anyone have any ideas what could be the problem?

Related...ish question. I've always bought flatbed scanners that could scan negatives. Am I better off getting a cheaper flatbed and a dedicated negative scanner in terms of quality and overall price? In short, can a great negative scanner and flatbed scanner be had for the same or less than one flatbed that can do negatives?

Are you saying that your Canon scanware does not have a SAVE AS menu choice?

As for negatives, I use an Epson Perfection V600 Photo scanner. It is a flatbed, and to do negatives or transparencies, one removes the upper pad so that the objects are illuminated from the top through the media.

I don't use Epson's scanware - I use Irfanview via TWAIN - it lets me make all the choices.

Goodness... irfanview is brilliant. 😱 I had no idea.
That solves that problem. What I was saying was that in Canoscan when you go to choose the folder to save in, 'Home' and 'Desktop' are literally my only options. No C or D drive.

That is odd about Canoscan. Is there an options menu wherein you can designate a storage drive? Glad you discovered Irfanview. Not only can you scan with it, but you can edit the images!

Honestly, I was seriously considering not fighting with the lack of TWAIN support in PhotoshopCC and just getting a new scanner. I have the Canoscan 8400F. But irfanview has changed all that and looks to be great for scanning my negatives and prints as well.
There is no setting to set storage drives as far as I can see. It simply stopped showing me the other drives, which it used to do as recently as two days ago. I'm wondering if this isn't in some way virus related? Although my system shows no other signs of it and a recent scan showed nothing. And anyway, why would it affect the save function of a program.

I have the 8800F scanner, working fine for some six or seven years after my HP flatbed's Xenon tube starting flaking out.

The Navigator software and its toolbar button menus all configure to a default "save" folder. So I'm a bit confused as to what is the problem exactly.
