Canon Xsi a.k.a 450D review is up @ dpreview

When it came down to entry level dslrs, I mostly recommanded Nikons but 450D changed it. 450D, IMHO, is really a great camera. It seems like Canon is really changing themselves in order to seriously compete with challengers.
However, though it's great in almost every aspects, the problem is the current price. $800 seems quite too much especially when 40D is only $120 more with the instant rebate.
Because of that, when 3 friends of mine asked for dslr recommandations, 40D became the pick. If only 450D was in $500 range, it'd been different.

Hopefully it'll fall a bit. I think the XT should be ousted from the lineup, the XTi should be in the $500 range, and the XSi should be around $650 if they really want to slay on sales (which they are doing and will continue to do anyway). I think you may be discounting the "soccer mom" phenomenon-- a camera even as big as the 40D scares people upgrading from point and shoots, and most don't have someone knowledgeable to advise them.

that's just the intro price for a new dreb. It's been that way since day one.

I agree. $500 would be too low for the 450D, but with that said I think the current 450D price will fall pretty quickly after this initial introduction into the market. Gotta charge those early adopters a higher price, right? With that said, I actually really want to go hold one of these things in the store.

Of course, the introduction price will fall soon. The only thing that seemed strange was that the price gap as well as the performance gap between entry to mid-range camera was so little. Even considering how Canon and Nikon have different line-ups, it doesn't make sense that Canon doesn't have sub $600 offerings beside older models of 450D. 450D, I think is too good and expensive to be a budget entry level camera. Given that, I really think below link is more than a rumor.

yeah, that move makes the most sense, sorta. At least given there's a 1000D in the numbering now.

xxxxD = super budget
xxxD = entry
xxD = prosumer/pro
xD = pro/i have too much money to blow =)

Although, if I were canon, I'd just milk the XTi as the super budget for now, and hold off until supplies run tight to introduce a new super budget model.

i've long thought that canon's strategy of using last year's rebel as this year's entry level was a bit suspect. people don't want to hear that the camera they just bought came out 3 years ago, even if it is still competitive. they've gotten used to the 9 month upgrade cycle that p&s cameras seem to be on. a new name is good, even if it is just a reworked XTi.


there are also rumors of a k1000d out there. which would make sense, considering how pentax's entry camera has gone up in weight and features.

At least the Nikon kit lens is above average. I took some spectacular images with my D300 and the 18-55mm VR.

At least the Nikon kit lens is above average. I took some spectacular images with my D300 and the 18-55mm VR.

the new canon kit lens is pretty good.

just compared focusing on the D60 to the XSi, both move the lens in about the same time, but the D60 pauses for a bit before it confirms.

iirc, it was discontinued the day the XSi was announced.

yeah, it was. and the dollar is worth about 10 to 13 yen less than it was in september 2006.

the price just seems high compared to where the 40D is (online, under $1000), though the 40D is still much more expensive on the shelf at best buy ($1300 w/ or w/o lens). though there is only one camera with more features for less money (A350 on sale for $810 at bby)


hmmm... is there a RZ coupon out there right now? and does it stack with the current 10% off cameras promo?

No complaints from me, but to suggest it's truly 'entry-level' at that price (or feature point) seems incongruous to me.

Regardless of other DSLR manufacturer's ranges, it's not even Canon's 'entry level' DSLR is it, they'll still sell the 400D, no?

My wife and I bought the XSi kit and are really enjoying it. The EF-S lens is helping us a lot.

It was 899 at Best Buy and I had a 12% coupon, so we got it for under 800 before tax. For that price I was happy. We've been wanting to go DSLR for a while and finally made the plunge.

We have the Canon 50mm f/1.8 coming and I can't wait to play with it.

We are still learning with this camera, but have gotten some great shots out of it.

I like SD slot after coming from a Fuji P/S with XD. I'm currently running a Transcend 8GB SDHC and it's keeping up with fairly large bursts.

The Live View could be handy on the camera, but it's not like a P/S live view in any way. I find it pretty useless for the most part. I have pretty bad eye sight due to my work (.net developer) and I find the view finder easier to see detail wise.

Right now I'd say we have the lens fever. I've been wanting to get a 55-250mm EF-S lens, but I'm going to hold off a little longer to get to know the camera and DSLR shooting in general.
