So my beloved S45 broke beyond repair about a year ago and I'm looking for a new digital camera that is similar. I'd appreciate some advice on a similar camera in today's lineup. A few things...
1) I want manual features. I don't mind the controls being hidden behind menus, but I like the ability to manually set the focus, exposure time, aperture, etc. if I really want to. That said, I don't want to get a full-fledged SLR because I know I won't want to actually take it with me and use it.
2) While I mentioned I didn't want an SLR, I have no problem with larger non-SLRs, i.e. I don't need to get something as small as the Canon SD series.
3) I'm not looking to spend that much and as a result I'm fine with not having all the latest features. I paid 500 for the S45 six or seven years ago. I'd gladly pay 100 for a new S45.
4) I don't care for many megapixels. I'd rather have 4MP of great image quality than 8MP of mediocre image quality.
5) Build quality is also nice.
6) Good low-light performance is a plus, but if I can take beautiful images in the day time, that's good enough.
Am I asking for too much?
Anyway, as a side note, I'm no great photographer by any means, but why do I feel like the image quality I got from my S45 is far superior to that of the current lineup of cameras? While the S45 was in the "prosumer" segment 6-7 years ago, shouldn't that quality have migrated down to say the SD series of today?
