Canon S1 IS compared to G5

A friend just got the S1 IS, which I was pretty impressed since it can record movies at 640x480 at 30fps, for ~9-12mins. Is this meant to replace the G5? Why would anyone buy the G5, when the S1 IS has a similar shape/size, seems to have the same features, plus the above mentioned movie capability, and image stabilization, neither of which the G5 has. I have the G2, which I'm thinking about replacing with the S1 IS.

I also have the Elph S410, and noticed the S500 doesn't have as good of movie features or image stabilization that the S1 IS has. Think the Elph series will ever have these features?

No, not meant to replace the G5. It's a niche camera.

The G5 was replaced by the PowerShot Pro1.

Digital Rebel > Pro1 IMO.

But it's expensive as hell. I have a G5, bought it 7-8 months ago, and it's done a great job, takes some awesome pictures!

Yeah, different cameras,

S1 = 3.2 MP
No hot shoe
Image stabilization
38-380mm f/2.8-3.1

G5 = 5MP
Hot shoe
35-140mm f/2.0-3.0

Neither of these had everything I wanted. I bought a Minolta DiMage A1

Strange. Seems to me the S1 is more similar to the G5 than the Pro 1 is. G5 = 5MP, S1 = 3.2, both similar size. Pro 1 = 8MP, and larger body.


Oh yeah, forgot, the S1 has 10x optical zoom as well.

As far as resolution, I don't think I've hardly even ever photographed 3MP pics with my G2, so that's not really a big problem to me. I never plan to use the hotshoe.

S1 IS not enough resolution @ 3.2 MP (I do 8 x 10 & 11 x 14 prints). No hot shoe
G5 not enough lens @ 35 - 140mm. No IS

If you want 8 MP, Minolta A2 > Canon Pro1
DSLR is nice if you dont mind the size, weight, cost and hauling around extra lenses. Minolta A1 and A2 has 28 - 200mm stabilized lens which is pretty versatile.
