Only 1.7/5 rating after 59 reviews.

Only USB 2.0 High-Speed connectivity.

Could possibly connect it to a router with a USB port to put it on a network, but I don't know how well that works for Host-based printers (the cheap kind).

Also, the cheaper the printer, the more they make off of you with the ink.

IMHO, not really worth it (*), unless you want a semi-disposable printer to only last a year in an dorm room.

(*) Based on the reviews on the "mother site". If there weren't so many bad reviews, especially with regards to the paper feed system, I'd say that this is a great deal.

Edit: It does have a scanner, apparently. So my question is, can you still scan, if you're out of ink? That would really make this worth it, just for a cheap document scanner.

The deal is available every year. The printer really isn't bad (I got one for my dad a few (3? 4?) years ago) BUT like all canon inkjet the inks are expensive and if you only print a few pages it is almost cheaper to just replace the printer then buy new inks. I've been getting my dad xl cartidges and they last a couple of years but the problem is that if you only print a few pages the cleaning cycle becomes expensive. This is not a unique problem to this printer - there was one of the three major brands (maybe it was epson not sure) where cleaning cycles were less expensive.

With the specific printer we purchased we have had no problems with printhead or paper feed; only problem has been ink cost. We're using the printer on a linux box (my dad only uses the browser and adobe and both of those work on linux so why buy windows?)

Hmm. I'd get one, if there were an easy way to network it. Anyone try plugging this into an (Asus AC68U-family) router's USB port? Will it work, and be accessible over the network?

OT:
Edit: I have been having "issues" with my Brother MFC-825JW, it stopped printing blue, and partially magenta, and then I replaced all of the color carts, and now it's printing those colors less than before. (No blue at all.) Need to dig out the code for the service menu, and do the DEEP clean cycle. Or get a syringe, and put some isopropyl into an old set of carts, and run some cleaning cycles that way.

Or find my local Brother service center, there's one within 100 miles of me.

No clue; I have my doubts but no clue. This person failed to make it work:

You could email canon - canon-usa is generally very quick to respond (1/2 to 2 days) and see if they think it would work. They might not know or they might have a definitive answer one way or the other.

I'd get 5 of them for 100 bucks and toss them as they break. Not a bad deal, imo.
Not a bad idea if you need an inkjet, but I also know where to get lasers for that much.

My wife's family has one of these I believe and while it worked well when they were using it regularly, once they let it sit idle it never worked for printing again, but they still used the scanning feature.

Well, my Brother MFC-825JW is not functioning (printing all colors) after a couple of maintenance-mode "deep clean" cycles, maybe I need fresher ink, I've had these carts (still vacuum-sealed) for a year or two. Or maybe I need printer service.

Anyways, I'm in for one, wish me luck getting it networked. :p

I decided to get a fresh new set of inkjet carts from a reputable online web inkjet cart vendor, and give it one last try clearing my Brother with "fresh" carts. I got cold feet, thinking about how to network the cheap printer from the OP. Was looking at the $44.99 version, with Wireless, but then I started thinking, I can get the entry-level Brother for $64.99. Models with ethernet start at $99.99.
