I also went with the S2 IS. It just fit my hands better, and I hate the proprietary battery that the Lumix uses. I got 8 Energizer 2500 mAh NiMH rechargeable batteries, and a 15 minute charger for $16 at Walmart. When I was looking, I couldn't find the battery for the panny for under $40. There were plenty of knock off makers online though, for around $34, but I learn my lesson with knock offs with my camcorder.

I got two 3rd party brand batteries for my FZ15 on ebay. They worked great. They costed $20 each after taxes. I sold them all.
Now I have 8 2500 mAh batteries and a MAHA charger for $55.
You got a cheapo charger if it cost around $6. Charger is more important than the batteries. Cheap chargers often could only charge half way.

No, I think it was priced wrong, as the charger & batteries came packaged together, but I'll find out later this weekend.

And?

OP got the Panasonic FZ20

Welp, I ended up getting the FZ20. I had to pull the trigger this evening as I had a BIG coupon/certificate expiring and the purchase place was out of the S2, with no promise date any time soon. Kinda sucked as the S2 seems to be in stock everywhere ... else.

Either way, I don't think I'll be too disappointed.

Thanx for all the replies !!!

OP made a big mistake! 😛

Doubt it, I have seen more people buy Panasonic cameras than canon, and I work for Panasonic.

Stop right there. Your credibility is shot.

why? because im confident that the panasonic camera is better than the canon? because i sell panasonic cameras to people and they like it better than the canon? You dont have good reason. Just because you work for a company doesnt mean you will be biased because im not. If someone doesnt like panasonic, ill sell them a different camera. simple as that. But i will tell you, im on my lunch right now, just today we have sold 14 panasonic cameras compared to 4 canons....

I have an FZ-5 and really think it's a nice camera. You can argue the sh1t into the ground, but that's my opinion, take it or leave it.😛

I could prognosticate which AT'er in one guess.
Who is it?
I'm interested. Schadenfroh, I suggest getting the FZ5 so I can possibly have the S2 RossMAN is talking about 😉.

If Schadenfroh isn't interested by Sunday night then it's yours, it's a killer deal for a new digicam 🙂

So do you work for Panasonic or are you a camera salesman? You said earlier that you work for Panasonic, but just now you said you sold 4 canon's?

And how is the panasonic better than the canon? You sound just like every other ignorant fanboy on this board. You make blanket statements with nothing to back it up.

For me the deciding factor when I bought my S2 IS was the features, ergonomics and the use of standard batteries. The FZ20 I was almost going to buy just didn't do it for me...it looked cheap, didn't fit in my hands, used proprietary batteries, and the movie mode wasn't all that great. Canon makes a quality product that takes great pictures. So what are your arguments fanboy?

edit: to the OP, instead of looking at the FZ5, why not look at their new FZ30? It's pretty nice...but a little more expensive. http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/panasonic/dmc_fz30-review/index.shtml

Funny, I personally think the S2 looks cheap, especially with that cheap noisy lens that extends out.
FZ20 on the other hand, has very nicely made internally focused lens, that's actually made out of solid metal and not cheap plastic. This gives another advantage to add filters and adapters onto the lens. Also the focusing is super smooth and silent. The motor on the canon is much noisier in comparison.
To me the FZ20 had a lot more of a quality feel to it.
See, it can go both ways.

I will pass, looks like I am going to have to divert the funds to buy a new printer for now. But thanks for the offer.

Thank you. Which brand printer are you going to buy?

Josh - You got PM 🙂

THose are good arguments, but I have to disagree on the cheapness feeling of the FZ20...it's body looked and felt more plasticky and cheaper than the S2. Plus the zoom of the Panasonic was slower than the S2 from what I remember. I don't doubt the FZ20 is a good camera, but the negatives far outweighed the positives for me. However, with the exception of the proprietary battery, the FZ30 seems to have rectified all of the problems I noticed with the FZ20.

My apologies, Rossy. I've unfortunately been away during the transit strike, or would have replied sooner.

The Anandtech member in question is a true Hot Dealer, is a well respected member of these forums, and uses the "officeguy6" avatar.

(Oh, and his name ISN'T Ross.)

What do I win?

product demonstrator for panasonic. The lens quality is the determining factor for me. I know panasonic uses the leica lens, which is a badass lens, although im not positive on the quality of the canon lens. I can tell you which camera more poeple buy. I dont pressure anyone to buy the camera, i just tell them about it. im a demonstrator not sales associate. on december 23rd, we sold 24 panasonic cameras. I think i saw 2 canon's go out the door.... I mean dont get me wrong i like canon. They do make awesome cameras, but as far as ease of use, lens quality, overall picture quality, and cost, panasonic wins my friend, hands down.
