Canon Powershot SD550 7.1MP - $350.00

People really need to read this because they swoon everytime a new camera comes out with an extra megapixel or 2:

The Megapixel Myth

There are so many things far more important than pixel counts for image quality. This trend towards putting such high pixel counts on small sensors is actually detrimental to picture quality as it is usually done for marketing purposes while sacrificing more important performance characteristics.

And if you don't believe one source try a couple dozen:

More Megapixel myth

I just bought the SD500 + 1gb card this last week @ Dell for $360 and just about flipped when I saw this thread. Did you get in on it when you posted? Looks like this deal is definitely dead ($450, not $350).

Thanks sxr7171 for the megapixel info.

unfortunatelly i didnt get in on the deal.. I was hoping for the 1.5% from a9 search off before I bought.. until I check about 2 hours later and they changed the prices.. they had the sd 500 for $300 and sd55 for $350... I am kicking myself right now...

Yeah, but its for a point and shoot, that audience just wants to be able to take pics on the go, picture quality isn't top priority(for them)

what's the difference between this one and sd500?

The lcd is larger but there are 2 major bug fixes as well.

1. No more purple frigning in bright light images
2. no more whining noise when doing movie mode

I wonder if there's a firmware update for the SD500 that would incorporate them?

Sure but why pay more for more megapixels if you don't get any benefit from it? Even worse is that you get worse results by spending more on these high megapixel cameras.

Also, even if these are point and shoots and the average point and shoot customer cares little for quality, if you have $x to spend wouldn't you at least want whatever gives you the best pictures for $x?

BTW, don't get me wrong I think the SD500 and the SD550 are excellent cameras but the SD200 and SD300 are much cheaper, smaller and perform faster due to smaller file sizes and result in more pictures per unit of memory card and the pictures take less space on your hard drive for storage. In theory the should also have better image performance since they squeeze less photosites onto the sensor. Those aforementioned characteristics of smaller camera, smaller files and faster performance are very important for the novice point and shoot consumer.
