Welcome to ATHD. As per the forum rules:

"What about COUPONS and PROMOTIONAL CODES?

You may post:

Links to coupons on the issuing vendor's own site.
Links to scans of coupons that invite you to share them with your friends.
Links to scans of other coupons, AS LONG AS they do not state that copies or reproductions are not allowed, or that the coupon is valid only for the original recipient.

DO NOT post:

Coupon or promotion numbers.
Links to coupon numbers you could not post, here.
Links to scans of coupons other than those listed, above.
Requests for others to post or send you coupon numbers or offers to send them to anyone else.

We may not catch every violation of these rules, but if you post it, and we catch it, your account may be locked without further warning."

Thus, the link to the coupon code will need to be removed.

That said, this is quite a deal on the S1 IS.

Simply because a coupon link navigates to a company's site does not quantify being posted on a company's site.

If one actually reads the link posted above, one would notice the following verbage:

"Only valid to customers who have received the e-mail"

I bought the S1 recently (for $300 from Dell when they had stackable discounts in Home S&P). This is an awesome camera! Sure it's only 3.2MP but the 10X _optical_ zoom and the superb image stabilization more than make up for it. You can take pictures at 10X zoom (equivalent to 310mm telephoto lens) without a tripod!

Actually, you understate the zoom power. The equivalent 35mm focal length range is38 to 380mm. The S1 is a neat camera. Although today some would dismiss a mere 3MP camera, that is plenty of resolution to produce excellent pictures, especially if you do most of your viewing over a montior.

which would be the better camera to purchase? canon s1 or sony f717

Not really a fair comparison because these are two very different cameras at very different price points.

The Sony is a 5MP camera with a 5X Zeiss lens which is very fast and nice piece of glass and has an excellent autofocusing system. The Sony will take better pictures without a doubt...if you know what you are doing. The downside...much more expensive camera, proprietary battery and memory $tick media. Even though this camera is over 2 years old, the going price is still hovers around $600. The Sony is a superb 5MP camera.

The Canon S1 is "only 3MP", still plenty of resolution. It uses AA batteries and compact flash media (what could be better?). Where the Canon excels is that it is very light and compact compared to the Sony and that 10X image stabilized (IS) lens creates so many possibilities. The value of IS cannot be overstated in a long zoom lens and low light photography. Yes, you can use a tripod with any camera to achieve the same results but who wants to drag one around. The Canon S1 should blow the Sony away in the "fun" factor. Add in the top notch video capture and the Canon becomes a very attractive. Since the price has dropped to below $350, this is an excellent value. Highly recommended.

The bottom line, the Sony has the ability to deliver superior pictures but in actual use, the Canon is more likely to deliver the goods.

A&M has the S1 IS for $259 and the 4mp, 10x optical zoom [no image stabalization though] Minolta Z2 for $265. My sis got the Z2 last month and she loves it. There's also a newer Z3 with IS but it's still above $400. The Minolta cameras use ED-APO glass in their lenses.

Be wary of purchasing photographic equipment at a significant discount from vendors in Nyc (Amphotoworld.com is based in Brooklyn). Happen to live in Nyc myself, and can attest most sell gray market goods, which translates to absolutely no warranty within the US.

Be certain to fully understand gray market goods prior to purchasing.

Use the A&M add to pricematch to your favorite vendor. They are BM and therefor qualify. My sis used their price to get the Z2 from Staples because they're local to her. You could try OfficeMax and their 115% pricematch to their $399 price to get the S1IS for $253.

Good luck. Report back your success, or lack thereof. Perhaps a bit beyond YMMV.

Thanks for the post, I have been waiting for this camera to be in the $300 range. I placed my order :)
Weird thing though, the email I got back from buy.com omitted the 10% discount, but when I emailed buy.com and asked about it they responded that it was just a glitch in their system and the $314.09 price is what is being charged. whew!

I have been using this camera for about 5 days now. It just eats the battery. i changed 2 sets of batteries in 4 days. I don't know what is the problem here. But I took most of the pictures while looking at the lcd screen. That could be the problem here. But still 8 batteries for 4 days is a bit too much for me. Is any one having the same problem?

The price point of the F717 is around $450 is most areas. If you can find it, the F717 is a way better camera for just a $100 more.

AA batteries don't last that long, especially if you're using the LCD, sounds normal to me.

Sorry, could you explain how this works? what does BM stand for? I read OfficeMax online help regarding 115% price compare and it says they do not match any price found on the internet...

Just wondering what does it take to do these price compare stuff - with $253 from realiable local store would be superior for a Canon S1.....

........this forum rocks........

With digital cameras you need to use NIMH batteries, with a NIMH charger. They have no memory effect, and can be recharged 1000 times.

If you're using regular alkaline batteries, that's about normal. But why would you? A set of good quality charger and 4 batteries will cost $20 or so (like the Panasonic set of 4 1950 mAh batteries and a charger). Those last forever in my S1.

Another good thing about the S1 is that the viewfinder is in fact a small, low-resolution LCD and it will show exactly what're aiming at, including zoom! So you may not use the LCD if you don't want to.
