Canon G series will always be better than their S series counterpart.
With compactness comes certain sacrifices.

ditto. the G2 has tons of more features than the s400.

i am really thinking of buying this camera but i also would probably need a bigger compactflash. about how many pics at res 1280*1024 could i fit on a 256 mb card?

1280x1024? I don't think it takes pics at that resolution. However at 1600x1200 it will hold almost 450.

that's not totally true. take it with a grain of salt.
look for example at the canon s40. it has faster startup time than the g2. also switching between play and record. smaller cameras are better at some things. (startup time is like how fast from turning it on you can shoot)

look for example at the canon s40. it has faster startup time than the g2. also switching between play and record. smaller cameras are better at some things. (startup time is like how fast from turning it on you can shoot)

We are talking about picture quality here.
Compact P&S is design for certain things.
Granted the picture quality has gone up but it still have to cut some corners to achieve that size.
The advantages that S400 has over G2 has nothing to do with fetures & quality.
There is a reason why the G series cost more than S series.
They can get more shot where the compact S series can only dream of.
Not to slam on S400 but that is just the fact.
