Go down to my post of 9-5-'08 to see the ZZF deal!

I have been shopping for a new digital camera (the flash tube on my ancient HP is broken) and after doing my homework had settled in on the Canon A series. This weekend, I went price checking after I saw the A590 IS listed in the coming week's Staples circular at $159. after $20. instant rebate, so I went price checking in earnest. I found that several reliable resellers had it at $145.00 and some even had free slow-boat shipping as well. Here are some:
BuyDig (a div. of Beach) - $145. w/ free shipping or add $6.00 for faster - I bought here.
ZipZoomFly - also $145. ZZF doesn't collect NYSTx but totalled out at $3. more than BuyDig at $10. for fast ship.
And Amazon has it at about $141. w/ free slow-boat, or + $6.76 for "std. shipping" but they charge NYSlsTx so it would come out at $8.00 more than BuyDig for me (plus BuyDig/Beach is right next door in NJ). If you live in a state where they don't charge the sales tax, Amazon will beat all on this one. Apparently there may be some other deals, but I don't see them from the Amazon page ($20. disct for using "Pay Later" and free prints from Shutterfly). If you find them, post a reply and let us know how to get them.

The Egg isn't close to these plus I'd get charged sls tx now.

Check Froogle and PriceGrabber for more.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the tip, I've been looking for a replacement for my parents for under $200 with pretty simple requirements, under $200, not too large, and easy to use. This looks to fit the bill nicely. I also added an Extreme III 2GB SD for $19.99.

Also here's a coupon for $10 off $100 that you may be able to use if its not 1 use only. I stacked this with the advertised coupon for another $10 off:

5185 3415 1566 2983

I did get charged tax, but shipping is free so its pretty much a wash. Plus Staples shipping for me has always been very fast, 1-2 days max.

My A75's LCD finally gave up the ghost...for $150, this wouldn't make a bad upgrade...

I got the A590 for Amazon for ~145 around the beginning of the summer...this is pretty much standard price. Nice camera.

I don't think $145. has been anywhere a routine price as I started looking about a week ago with the A580 and also looked at the other Canons near the price and I'm sure it was generally more at like $155. and up. IAC, it's a good price on a good camera from several reliable resellers. I like that it can do full manual mode as well as some useful preset modes. I used to be pretty handy with a Minolta SRT-101 - all this automation numbs the brain and weakens the skillz...

While a lot look at the A series because of the manual controls, most would be better suited with an SD series.

Until the internet it seems, people didn't really shop things like cameras, tvs and the like so much.

Most would just head down to the local big box store and pick up a kodak or whatever sized TV they wanted that was at the best price.

Now people need the equivalent of 1000 lens built in and 1080p only.

:)

Most out there really couldn't go wrong with a the A590 IS though.

The A720 is still out there and is listed as a current model on Canon's web site. It's just in that in-between range where a few dollars more can get 10x or higher zoom and other wanted features like a hot shoe for flash and a filter thread on the lens for attachments. Once you're willing to spend over $200. for a camera, a lot of new potential wants open up to you.

Dell actually had the A590 with a 2GB SD card and free shipping for $131 earlier this morning. I ordered four of them for our office. Right afterwards, their price jumped to $154. I'm thinking Dell has an online price adjuster sort of like Newegg, so they might drop the price back down again.

I got mine next day from Staples, which again kept true to their extremely fast free delivery reputation. YMMV of course depending on where you live.

I gave the camera a test-drive and its pretty nice, a bit larger than I expected but still compact enough to fit in a pocket or jacket. One thing I noticed right away is that the LCD is GRAINY. I thought it was a defect at first....read at least 5 online reviews that did not mention anything about it. Went to Newegg's user reviews and saw it mentioned 3-4x within 2 pages so that confirmed it wasn't a camera-specific defect, but was probably true of all A590s. That's also why I don't think Newegg reviews are useless by the way, they're typically great for diagnosing problems.

Oh? What would you recommend for less than $200 ? The A720 when you can find it is typically just below 200.

I really like the Panasonic LZ8 I just got for $111 with 12% MS Cashback. The image quality is good for a point and shoot, and the high ISO quality is improved due to the Venus IV image processor. Most point and shoots have problems at over ISO 400, and the Canon A series (and my Panasonic) are no exception. There is only so much you can do with a tiny 1/2.5" sensor, no matter what brand and model.

What I like about the Panasonic over the Canon A series is the features list. In a smaller form factor that also takes AAs, the LZ8 packs a full manual mode, wider angle 5x Leica Lens, Optical IS, Videos at 848x480 30 FPS, 2.5 FPS continuous shooting, and an Intelligent Auto mode that can decide whether the camera should be in portrait mode, landscape mode, etc.

you2,

per Froogle, only unknown resellers listed the 720 for less than $200. For under $200. I'd look at Canon, Panasonic, Casio, Olympus. Pick the ones with the features you want and then weed that list using the reliable review sites. I've only taken 3 pix far with the 590, so no idea what I think if it so far except that the manual is damn confusing. And don't trust their battery description - it's bassackwards!

I tried Dell and their site wouldn't let me get to checkout. They charge ST in NY too.

Not sure if this is of interest to anyone, but for those wanting to use it for movie clips the specs show it does 640 x 480 @ 20 fps or 320x240 at 30fps. The A570 IS is a 7.1M and does 640 at 30fps. I have several A5xx models with my latest one being the A570 IS. I've been happy with all of them.

Well, it was a good deal relative to earlier prices, but I see at the web site that the MSRP has been dropped to $150 and there are a couple of new A series models in the line. I'm satisfied with mine except that the manual is confusing and its index is jumbled.

ZZF has a new deal in their newsletter today. ~$130. + sh (it's 8 by Fedex Home and $10 by FedEx air saver (2-3 days) to me in central NY. I just checked Froogle and ZZF is the lowest reliable reseller in the list. Linkage

Amazon's prices change too often unless it is an email deal. Like newegg, prices can change based on inventory status. I take the Std. Shipping upgrade anyway so the order gets moving faster - at that point things are even. Plus Amazon is still collecting sales tax for NY, so for me Amazon loses this one...

Bought a 590IS from Amazon on the third and it shipped from Dallas on the fourth. Should be here this morning (Sat.) or Monday. I paid $133.00 shipped. Had it in my cart at $135.00 for several days. When I saw the two dollar drop I figured it was time. Probably dropped another ten by now.
