Canon Pixma MP600 printer

Does anyone have the MP600 printer from Canon? I've seen it rated among the top all-in-one printers, so I'm starting to look at it more closely to see if I want to get it.

One of my main questions is how is it's ink usage? How long can you go in between cartridge replacement? My parents used to have a Canon printer years ago that would never read the amount of ink in the cartridges correctly, so it always thought it was out of ink. I hope Canon has fixed that problem since then (it's been many years) but I am still skeptical of it.

I've got an MP600. It reads ink levels fine. I've had it first came out (sept I think) and I haven't had to replace a cartridge yet.

The Mp600 is a chipped Canon and uses an entirely different method of monitoring ink. Its also---OEM cartridges to OEM cartridges---one of the most economical inkjet printers to use.
If you are interested in refilling or using third party cartridges, there are method to defeat the chip---but you then lose ink monitoring.

I was like 50/50 on the MP600 and the HP photosmart 3210, however I ended up with the HP for 3 reasons.

1. It was a network printer, so I could print from all 3 of my computers without having to have them on.
2. When I was at best buy, there was an HP rep there who gave me a 25$ gift card if I bought the printer
3. I had a rewards zone 12% off coupon for printers from bestbuy, and the HP rep made convinced me it was a good call, and Im a sucker :laugh:

I do love the printer though, great colors, awesome photo quality, and replacing the ink is actually pretty cheap (5 colors + black). Its about 10 bucks per cartridge, however I havent even come close to using any one color, and theres alot of ink in each reservoir for the money. That being said, unless you need a network printer, the MP600 is excellent, my roommate had one and loved it.

Is the chip swap easy? BTW, was the ip4200 the last of the non-chipped Canon's or was it the models just before?

I had my mom buy the ip4300 this weekend (~$44), to replace her S530D, but we haven't opened it yet, because she really wants an all-in-one. I've suggested not getting one in the past since the photo printing quality wasn't as good as a regular photo printer, and because they were so large. But looking on Canon's website, the all in one's are now smaller, and looking at the specs, they look the same as their photo printers, from what I can tell (I'm not expert). So I'm wondering if the MP600 prints photos as good as the ip4300, and if it's worth the extra $100+. The specs seem the same from what I can tell. And would the MP600 scanner do as well as a stand alone?

Will the MP600 print on printable DVD/CDs? Or is Epson still the only game in town for that?
I've read that some European Canon printers support printing on DVD/CDs and you can get "kits" on eBay to enable that function on some US Canon printers.
