Canon GP-E2

I have a Rebel T4i and I am looking to add GPS capabilities. If I am on the beach, however, I prefer using my P&S camera with its waterproof housing. I do know that the GP-E2 has logging capabilities in addition to EXIF writing.

My questions is this:

Does the GP-E2 need to be connected to the camera for the logging capabilities (i.e. does it require a hot shoe)? I would want to leave it on in my backpack, but disconnected from a camera and use it as a traditional GPS logger.

If I am in the US I can use my cell phone for geo tracking, but this would be for international travel. Clearly, 99% of the time this will be on my camera. I am just trying to plan for all scenarios that may crop up.
