Canon G3 vs. Sony DSC-S85

I'm in the market for a 4MP camera and I've narrowed my decision between the Canon G3 or the Sony DSC-S85.

What I'm looking for in a camera is that it's small, easy to use, and that it has both auto and manual modes. I have little if any experience in photography since I never had a descent camera. But I've been wanting to do this for a long time so I feel it's time to treat myself to proconsumer camera.

I've read the reviews of both cameras at dpreview.com and it looks like both cameras are neck and neck with the Sony S85 being slightly better in image quality. Actually all the reviews I've read gave both camera high marks. The only thing that bother's me is that Sony uses memory sticks which is limited to 128mb. I have an IBM 1GB Microdrive laying around that I could use with the Canon. But other than that, I'm stuck in the middle and can go either way.

What do guys recommend? Does anyone have any experience with either camera?

TIA.

I LOVE my Canon PS G-2. which is pretty much the same thing as the G-3. Takes great pictures, and works with CF-II.

Vote for Canon here.

I consider the G3 to be the more powerful camera, but the S85 as being much easier to use.

Get the G3 unless you find a smoking deal on the sony. Why the heck won't they go CF instead of memory stick.

They want other's to adopt the stick so they can charge them royalties. Well it isn't going to happen because the stick is just another flash memory type (nothing new or better than the other forms) and it isn't even cheap. I don't have either of these camera but I have had a Canon S30 for a year (bought it for $500, based off the G2) and I think it is a great camera but I have to say that it doesn't have the best macro lense.

That's what dpreview said about the G3. It rated as average whereas the S85 was rated as "relatively good". But overall, I think I like the G3 over the S85 because it's newer and has more features.
