I did tests on my f/1.4, but I can't upload them onto my web page because the free AT hosting is down, and Smugmug can't display rows of full sized photos side by side, and of course this forum software doesn't allow viewable pictures in threads.

At wide open I definitely have the purple halation, but it is more or less gone at f/1.6. My lens is strange though. With AF the image is crisp at apertures at and close to wide open, BUT as I stop down the images actually become LESS crisp when AF-ing at each aperture. When I manual focus using my Katz Eye and hold this focus for all my shots as I incrementally stop down the lens, the shots that are stopped down are really really crisp, but become less crisp as it gets closer to wide open.

FBB, the problem you describe occurs because the camera autofocuses when the lens is wide open, but the focus shifts as the aperture closes. Though I'm not sure how you don't have this problem if you are also focusing manually without using the DoF preview...

Punchkin: As I wrote before, everyone wants/knows Canon should update the 50/1.4 but they won't due to the reason I mentioned (competition with the 50/1.2L).

So you have two options: don't take any photos because you keep waiting for the perfect 50mm lens or do you take photos with the best lens for your money at the time?

I think people just have to choose the latter if they enjoy the hobby.

Here are some 50 1.4 pics. There is some halation associated with this lens wide open... I think at 1.4 the sharpness is workable and fine. The focus is faster and quieter than the 1.8. Also the bokeh is nicer and rounder than the 1.8. These are all handheld at iso 400

edited to add these are all straight raw to jpg conversion. No pp or sharpness added.

i would say the 2.2 is a killer

If he is, why did you resurrect a thread only to start up a fight again?
Punchkin has been good lately, please don't antagonize him.

and c'mon, your first post?

Speaking if 50mm primes, the new sigma one looks very interesting especially since it uses 77mm size filters and has HSM. Price seems to be around $500. Also it looks huge on this picture

it's just that the SD14 is really small. smaller than an E-420.
