What do you guys think of a new 300D with kit lens for $650 at Circuit City? I guess they're closing them out because of the XT. Not a bad price for a brand new camera.

Im sorry but that guy is doing a ton of post processing.....

Absolutely. That, and using a polarizer to get the Fujicolor effect.

The images are decently sharp, though. The reality is that for those kinds of resolutions on a digital medium like a webpage, any of these lenses will "suffice". When going to print them or enlarge them is where it all falls apart.

The gems of the non-L series Canon line include:

  • 50mm f/1.8 (so very sharp, and only $50-70! Why? The engineering to make a prime lense is relatively easy compared to zooms.)

  • 100m f/2.8 macro (blisteringly sharp)

  • Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 Macro - while not a Canon lens, this lens is regularly reviewed to be as good as an "L" lens, and it only costs $360 bucks (there's currently a $30 rebate on this to bring it down further!)

The XT really is a stark update to the 300D/Rebel. I wouldn't waste money on somethin only a $100 cheaper. I got my Canon Rebel XT for $749 shipped, and you can find similar deals even now. Check out Beach Camera, for example (which is about 15 mins from where I grew up - I had them shipt to NY to avoid taxes!!) or wait for Dell coupons to resurface.

Don't toss your money down the drain. I only wish the Rebel XT was the same form factor as the Rebel. The XT is just a touch too small! But that won't stop me. 🙂

Well it turns out it was the floor model, so I passed. But I won't buy the XT, it isn't comfortable at all. And the 300D is very comfortable.

And give me back my avatar!

I have the 100mm 2.8 for my 20D. I can attest to it's quality

You guys suck... I wanted one before... and this thread did nothing but make me want to go get one NOW!@ Good thing best buy salesmen suck. I went to look Saturday and they couldn't tell me anything about the camera other than printing info fromk Bestbuy.com, couldn't find the lense, and the camera was dead and they don't charge them.

Maybe I'll find a better store today. By the way nice photos...

EDIT

Beach camera has some decent deals... What accessories are "needed" for a beginner. Other than the standard lens do I need filters or anything like that? Is there another lense that's needed?

Check out buydig.com
Best dealios on cameras..
I'd get a fast 50mm..

filters degrade image quality. They are definitely not needed.

I would have a different opinion, get at least, a circular polarizer or a UV filter.
Once you start shooting with one, you will see the difference.

I think the 18-55mm F2.5/5.6 is a great lens for beginners.

Here are some pics I took with it (after my first week of shooting SLR):
Waves
Window

Here is an attempted macro shot...
Painted Lady butterfly

It turned out nice but not quite as crisp as a dedicated macro lens.

The only thing about this lens that's holding me back is the zoom. I'm planning on getting a 70-300 soon.

SaigonK now I want to move back home to Brunswick....and get a rebel XT

🙂 I hear ya!
This camera was so worth the money especially when I am travelling. Though i think I am going to buy a small digicam for those times when the XT is just to intrusive...

They are closing the Naval Base up in Brunswick, might not be such a good place to go back to.

sweet another Mainer, From brunswick even, 😀

yea too bad about teh base, that is really gonna suck

nice pics as always

and whoever commented on the colors in the sunset i can post up like 100 of them, very similar, directly out of camera that look just like that, some even taken with a 1.4mpix cam

sunsets in maine just look like that

Hey you were in NH eh!? I was there back in 2001 and I loved it, glad you could get some good pics while you were there, brings back good memories. I was back east for a mountain biking expedition and I wasn't able to bring a camera :brokenheart: Plus they didn't have my Digital Rebel back then either 😉

Lived in NH for a number of years. Loved it there.

Wallydraigle and I will be headed out through VT, NH and ME the first week of October. Infortunately, the auto road to the top of Mt. Washington will be closed.

Oh well, we can do the Green Mts, the Whites, and onto the ME coast at Acadia 😀

I think we'll have some pics 😀
