It was $855 at Best Buy last week, in stock at nearly every one in my state. Added the 12% RZ coupon and got it for $752 out the door.
 
I didn't keep the kit lens; sold it for $140 on CL. Rebel XSI body for $615 FTW.

It's not really a crap lens. This is probably explainable by simple stock issues. Most people probably have been buying the body only, or there were fewer initially produced.
 
A better deal is the EOS 40D for $979.99 at Costco.
