Canon D60 vs. 60D

Sometimes I find these model numbers confusing. My first DSLR was the Canon D60 in 2002, successor to their first prosumer, D30. After that I got a 20D, and then a 5D. The old D60 was a decent camera - but nowhere near the current 60D. You'd think they could use model numbers less subject to confusion.

i thought it was to distinguish them from nikon's Dx/Dxx/Dxxx/Dxxxx numbering scheme.

Canons lineup is pretty straight forward.

xD = pro/semi pro
xxD = semi pro/amateur
xxxD = amateur
xxxxD = entry level

Much more understandable than nikons which is all over the show at the moment.

That makes sense today. But, the first two Canon DSLRs were Dx (D30 and D60.) That means we have D60s and 60Ds. I guess my point is - why use 60 twice for two different models?
