CanoScan LiDE 20 for 29.99 + tax at Fry's

I wasn't expecting much, just some outdated hw and sw, but I was pleased how easy it was to set up.

There was this document by Canon near the pile of these scanners on display that refers to the Interface as follows:
USB 2.0 Full Speed (USB 1.1 equivalent). Are they trying not to say that it has the same specs as a 2.0, but the same speed as a 1.1 or that it's backwards compatible?

Pretty good for scanning rebates.

Does this scanner have the same extremely annoying habit of "adjusting the lamp" before EVERY scan for about 5 seconds as my canonD1250U2F?

No idea... But we picked up 2 of em to save on shipping... Looks like its not limited to 1 per customer...

very tempting. my visioneer 8100 takes up too much room..

how's the quality of the scans?

this will finally complete my collection full circle. my canon a40, canon i850 printer.. and a canoscan scanner. 🙂

Backwards Compatable...

Its USB 2.0 but will work fine on USB 1.1 if thats all ya got...

For $30 + tax? Good enough for me. 🙂

From reviews on Amazon.com of the CanoScan LiDE 30

I don't know for a fact that this information applies to the LiDE 20 but it seems likely

This is by far the slowest scanner I've ever had (4 others were models from HP and UMAX).

"USB 2.0 full speed" specification is misleading; this unit operates at USB 1.1 speed, although it may be using USB 2.0 protocols.

I'm pretty sure only the new LiDE 50 is USB 2, my Lide 30 is USB 1.1....

Some consortium came up with new naming and pissed a lot of people off. There was a thread about that here a month or two ago.

USB 2.0 is referred to as "USB 2.0 High Speed"
USB 1.1 is referred to as "USB 2.0 Full Speed"

This is basically a USB 1.1 device.

I have the N670U, its pretty good. Doesn't do that adjusting the lamp before each scan. Only when I turn it on, and after maybe 50 scans it will tell me it needs to caliberate and takes a couple minutes to do so. Fairly fast. The slimness makes a big difference on my crowded desk.

I bought the LiDE 20 at Amazon for $50 a few months ago, and it's a great scanner for the price. I haven't used another, but this one works well, seems to have very nice IQ, and the single cable is great. It's fast enough for me, with scans opening up in an app a few seconds after the scan is done (this on an Asus A7N266-VM's USB1 ports, so 1MB/s max). It's relatively quiet at higher resolutions as the scanner moves slowly, but the motor/drive is a tad noisy otherwise (returning home or scanning low-dpi B&W docs). Very useful for storing copies as PDFs.

Just keep in mind that LED scanners don't have great (any) depth of field, so the source material must be pressed against the platen to be in focus. If you put a book on there, you'll have to keep it pressed down so the text near the binding is fully pushed against the glass, otherwise it won't be legibile.

And the software seems decent enough--it just works for my needs. I haven't really tried, nor do I need, OCR, but scanning photos/newspapers/magazines and making copies (digital or print) is simple and satisfactory.

how accurate are the colors of the scanned copy compared to the the original. i should have gotten this when i had the chance. im considering getting it next time it goes on sale. currently have a visioneer scanner which isnt bad, but the color accuracy is abit off.

how will this compare to my 6yr old HP ScanJet 5P SCSI scanner that i got for $250 back then brand new...

I have a 5P and a Canoscan 670U - which should be comparable to the Lide20. The Canoscan is every bit as good as the 5P except for making copies. If the Lide20 is like the Canoscan 670U it will chop off the top or bottom of a 8 1/2" x 11" piece of paper - very annoying. I know this problem has been discussed on these forums before - has Canon fixed this problem?

I've heard the LiDE20 has the same internal scanning mechanism as the N670U (i.e. same scanner except for exterior cosmetic changes and added buttons).

the visioneer 8700 usually goes for around this price AR at amazon. it's bigger, but better. 4800X1200, 48-bit color
