I just grabbed a canon A70 from target with that 33% raincheck discount. Now this is my first digital camera and I just wanted to take some tips from you guys out there. Do digital cameras need special care ? like do normal camera covers work or some specific kind should be used. Do I need to get rechargeable batteries or would normal batteries work ? I wan't to shoot some movie clips also so what kind of memory should I grab 256/512 MB ?

Thanks!!

a digicam will drain rechargeables too (even faster) but you can at least recharge them so you don't go through batteries like mad.
i have a 512MB CF card for my S230... for the price... just get a 512 :)

yea, rechargeables last longer.

oh, but the guy has the canon s230; it doesn't take the cool (and super affordable) rechargeable AA batteries that us a70 users use :). maybe thats why his drain quickly.

Yes definitely go with quality rechargeable batteries, remember the charger is also just as important as the batteries themselves.

Do yourself a favor and read The Great Battery Shootout first.

Next you need to find somewhere to buy rechargeable batteries from:
BatterySpace.com
SunnBattery.com
Thomas-Distributing.com

Go with 256MB or 512MB, remember it's a digicam not a camcorder ;)

Make sure that the A70 can take a 512 MB CF card... Last I heard the answer was no.... check the manual for max CF card size before buying one...

Wow, you guys like to take a lot of pics. I have a 256 meg card that I used in my A70, and I'm now using in my A80. That was more than enough pics for me. I just bought it over a 128 because I got it AR for $25. :)

Rechargable batteries for a digital camera are a MUST! I also carry a set of alkalines for emergencies.

About that digital camera needing care question. I bought a A60 last fall. My wife used to keep it in her purse all the time so the LCD screen in the back got scratched big time. No worries though its a hard plastic screen and the pictures still come out looking great. Ive also dropped it a few times and it still works. Pretty durable I think.

A nice big memory card and 2 sets of high capacity rechargeable NiMH batteries are a must with a digital cam! If you have those, you will have so much fun, I promise you!!

EDIT: And do get a camera pouch! I am so glad I did that. Even after fairly heavy abuse my A60 still looks like new.

where do you get em ? At best buy it was like $130+

ATHotDeals and chubbybillfold.
I suggest getting a case to protect the camera and carry your second set of batts. On 1800mAH NiMHs the darn thing lasts forever, but when I'm shooting a whole day's worth of autoX, I sometimes need the second set. Oh, and you'll prolly drop your camera at least once... that's what the case is for.

I tried the ones at BatterySpace.com. They are out of stock .. There is a sandisk 256 MB CF card for $39.00. Is that ok ?
