Canaon A70 is as low as $188

Go Canon. The Panasonic is nice - but Canon is a long time camera maker - Panasonic is a tape recorder company. 🙂

I would also consider the Olympus D740 Ultrazoom (10X) now on sale at B&H Photo for $299.95.

as an FZ1 user, I am very pleased with the camera.

I have a friend with an a70 and another with an a80 and can tell you they are both great as well. As far as ease of use, as well as compactness. etc

The fz1 comes with an adaptor hood so buying filters and teleconverters becames that much cheaper.

For me it came down to the fact that I will never print beyond 4"x6" so 2mp was fine.

Also remember that the FZ1 has image stabilization, which works very well.

The A60/A70 has a larger CCD than the Panasonic as well (1/2.7" compared to 1/3.2"). You can also fit the A70 in your pocket in a pinch, while even the largest of pockets would have trouble with the Panasonic.

Personally, the extra zoom does nothing for me, but I'm more of a point and shoot person.

one feature that is news to me is the time delay during picture taking with dig cams. up to a second after you press the button. I have been told this IS NOT PRESENT with the A70 Canon. so you get want you intend to shoot if it's moving or not

"Not Present" is hardly the word to describe the A70, or any con/prosumer digital cameras for that matter. I experience shutter lag even with my G5. You'll need to go the DSLR route to eliminate or minimize shutter lag.

Lets be clear here:
A70 = 3.2MP
A80 = 4MP

Also the A70/A80 have a burst mode which allows you to take 2.2 frames per second for up to 12 shots. Also for the price difference (~$60) you can purchase a Zoom lense for the A70.

Go Panasonic. I have both Panasonic and Canon, love Panasonic more.

so you must have taken identical snaps with the two and compared image

can you see a diff in the MP ( pan is 2.0 /Canon is 3.2)?

Yes, in 1600x1200 I could see no difference. But when you need optical zoom, Panasonic wins.
Point-shoot or what, zoom is always a good option. I think Panasonic is for men, Canon A60/70/80 is for women. I carry my black Panasonic, my wife carries her silver Canon.

The FZ1 has been replaced by the FZ10, with 4MP (or at least, it has been over here in Asia). It's a great camera. The lens is by Leica.
