Used ones are selling for $550-650 depending on condition. The grip is worth ~$100 or more depending on if extra batteries are included. The 40D is under $1000 now. You can do some pricematching on kits and by selling the kit lens and using rebates you can get one for a decent price.

It would also depend on what your use of the camera would be to say whether you should ditch the Xti or go for a 40D. The price is not the best for a used camera, and it has the same digic II sensor as the XTI. So unless you need the stronger body, thumb wheel, or increased fps, you may not have a need to upgrade.

I recently sold my 30D and got a 40D and immediately noticed the difference in the new Digic III sensor.

40D is only $940 from j&r through amazon. battery grip isn't that necessary.

OK - let me rephrase. I would not pay over $500 for a used 30D body. :) It is still a bad deal.

I just sold my 20D for $450. A 30D for $800 is a terrible buy, even witha grip. Frankly a 30D is a bad buy any way you look at it, it's the awkward incestuous stepchild of the 20D and 40D.

Why? I've got a 5D now

Seriously though, the 30D is a 20D with picture styles and a larger LCD. certainly not worth the premium.

I needed it for the buffer.

There is little to no premium. It also had spot metering, a longer-rated shutter, better buffer, improved AF tracking, and several other improvements. Well worth the several to zero extra dollars these days over the 20D.
