I'm thinking about picking up the Canon 200mm f/2.8 for telephoto purposes with my Rebel XT.

I'd mainly be using this for shooting sports from the sideline and when I bring my camera to a pro-sports event.

Does anyone have any input on this lens? I've thought about the 70-200mm f/4L IS, but it costs almost twice as much as the prime and I feel with that lens, I would be using it mostly at the 200mm end anyway.

Well the f4 isn't fast enough for night time sports, think about the 70-200 2.8IS

The thing is, that's mostly out of my budget. The 70-200 f/4 IS was the very top of my budget. My question is, does anyone have any experience with the 200mm f/2.8 prime lens. I'm not really looking to do nighttime sports (though I never really know).

it's a good lens, as long as you're comfortable shooting a prime that long. I personally would feel a little restricted. I can deal w/ it on the normal/wide end, but when I get to telephoto range, I like zoom. Plus, I can't handhold much over 135 w/o IS =P

For a second I was thinking.... 70-200 out of your range, but you're going to get a $5000 200mm prime?

But then I saw the f/2.8
