Canon 17-85mm Lens vs. Canon 28-135mm Lens.

I'm a noob when it comes to digital photography, so i was wondering if somebody could clarify what the differences are and which one they recommend for a NY scenery shooting?

I dont shoot canon but i assume your using a 350D (rebelXT to you americans) or a 20D. Either way they have a 1.6x crop and that should mean that the 28mm on the 28-135 lens on your camera will act like a 45mm lens on film. This will be quite a narrow field of view and you might find this hard to work with after a while unless you get a dedicated wideangle lens like the Canon 10-22mm or the Sigma 10-20mm which then the 28-135 lens will probably be the better buy.

However if youre only planning to shoot with one lens and dont see yourself buying a couple more, then the 17-85 should be great for all conditions.

Furthermore, both being Canon they should be of very high quality and sharpness and contrast should not be a problem.

One more thing, what are the apertures on these lenses? If you do a lot of shooting in low light or at night time then having a faster aperture will of be great use to help get nice shots, short of using a tripod of course.

Canon EF-S 17mm - 85mm f/4.0-5.6 USM IS

Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

im guessing its those 2 lenses you mean, both cost around the same ammount ~500$ depending on the seller and what rebates are out, there is a rebate for the 28-135 which nocks it down a few, they are both good alright lenses, id priob give the not to the 17-85 because its wider, so after teh crap you will still have like a 28mm lens instead of a 45, only drawback to it is that it is a EF-S lens whichmeans it will work on about 3 cameras that canon currently makes and WILL NOT work on a film camera

In terms of optics, focus speed, and build quality, the lenses are about the same IMO. (I use to own the 17-85 and considered the 28-135). The 17-85 has a newer version of Canon's IS system.

The decision boils down to price and range. If you shoot more wide angle, get the 17-85. If you shoot more telephoto, get the 28-135. Don't forget that the 17-85 was designed for DSLRs with an APS-C sensor, such as the Rebel, Rebel XT, and EOS-20D. The 17-85 has an EFS mount and cannot be used on non-APS-C bodies. The 28-135 has an EF mount and can be used on the entire Canon lineup.

The 17-85 sells for $560 on Amazon. The 28-135 for $520. So price should not be a huge concern.

In my case, I opted for the Canon EFS 10-22 and Canon EF 24-104 F4L IS combo. I also have a Tamron 28-75 F2.8, which is perhaps the best lens you can buy for the money. Next on my wish list include the forthcoming EF 50 F1.2L and EF 70-300 IS.

Jesus.. f1.2L that would be something. haha damn expensive i would expect though, seeing the jump in price for the nikon 50mm f1.8 to the f1.4 ah. pity i went Nikon.

why are you pitying that decision, the lenses are the same quality and the nikons are cheaper

Well technically the Nikons have better ergonomics (D50 Vs 350D) but the lenses from Canon are held in higher regard... Either way.. im starting out so theres plenty of time for change and improvement before worrying about the subtle flaws in lenses.

so you're saying the EF-S lens wont work on a Canon 5d?

You bought a 5D and yet your new to photography?!?!?!

Edit: No it won't work unless you feel like modding your mirror

Damn i was about to come over and steal it off you. Good luck with it all, if your thinking u may want to get into it seriously though you may want to get a nicer lense.

I waited a while and my first one was a 17-40 F4.0 L Is very nice and one of the most reasonably priced L series lenes.

Good luck

the sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 is pretty good too, so long as you get a good copy 🙂 but it falls into the EF-S trap. But I figured I won't be getting a new body anytime soon.. it'll give enough time to find a replacement if i get a body that can't use EF-S
