Cannot use XP windows update...

Do I gather correctly that you want to use the corporate update site because the automatic one isn't working for you? If you want the automatic update to work you might try posting exactly what's happening when you try to use it to see if someone might have a suggestion for fixing the problem. My experience so far with WinXP is that the automatic update can fail if certain services have been disabled (as opposed to setting them to manual) or if there are corrupted or incomplete / failed downloads in the \WUTemp directory or TIF.
