cannot surf the internet from workstations

I have three different computers that all have the same problem. They can all access all network resources like email and they can logon a domain but they cannot surf the internet.

All three computers are joining domains. They are all running XP Pro. They were all recently wiped out and reinstalled. One of the three could surf the internet briefly after being wiped out - the other two could not. Two of the three are on the same network, and one of these I know for sure works on a different network with no problems.

They all work fine EXCEPT for surfing the internet. They all reslove the domain name and say they are openning the page, but I get a "page cannot be displayed" error. All the machines' settings in IE and Network Properties are identical to the other machines on the network that can surf the internet.

I appreciate any help!

Will need a little more info on how your network is setup. Are you on a Hub that connects to a router? Where is the internet connection in relation to your network?

That kind of info will help us help you. 🙂

The internet connection is through DSL. The DSL goes through a router. The server is Windows 2000 Small Business Server. It functions as the DHCP server, exchange server, and PDC. I think thats it...

I'm not sure how many ports the router has, but most everything if not everything is plugged into a switch that is right next to the router.

Ok, that's what I was getting at. Thanks. I know the questions are routine but without seeing how it's all configured this is the only way to help.

The first thing to do is ping your router from any workstation. If you get a reply from that than ping your DSL modem. This way you will at least know where the problem may originate. You can actually start with the server but as you said, everyone seems to be "talking" just fine internally.

I am not at the location now, so I will have to try pinging everything tomorrow. However, when I'd try to reach a website in the status bar IE would say "connecting to 111.111.111.111" or whatever the IP was.

That still doesn't make sense as to why those two machines could not reach the router or the modem if they cannot. They have the same settings as the other machines in the office that can reach the internet fine.

Any other ideas without me having to ping stuff?

hmm...do an "ipconfig /all" on both those machines and check their DNS server settings. Then compare that to the workstations that can reach the internet. You might also check the hosts file on the machines to see if there are entries in them that there shouldn't be.

Alright, I'll compare the DNS settings tomorrow. I know the host files are clean though. Thanks for the help!

I still wonder why suddenly I've had this same problem with 3 different machines on 2 different networks recently.

Sounds to me like DHCP is not correctly set up. Do the ipconfig /all and see what your getting for your gateway and DNS servers.
