cannot place volume control in Taskbar

when I go into volume settings and tried to click the box to add volume control in the Taskbar it tells mestays "that the volume control has not been installed. To install it, use add/remove programs in control panel." Can somebody shed some light on this subject for me ?

Jeesh, I shoulda looked a little further the link pertains to Win98. I'm assuming you're on XP?
