Cannot open file/applications

I cannot open any files/application in my Xp system. They all now come with an lnk(LNK) extension. I want to revert the system to a previous state but I can't run
msconfig due to the lnk extension.

What is an lnk(LNK) extension and how do I fix this situation? I googled lnk but the response I got is not helpful at all.

Please help and thanks in advance
