I tried the Windows Update just stopped at the "Performing Cleanup" dialog. Tried downloading it on another computer and then transferring to install it again, but it stopped at "Performing Cleanup" dialog. Any way I can install it a different way? I don't know what else to do.

There is a good chance your computer is prioritized (exuse my spelling), and that could mean that you cant update your system.

Tell me what the brand of your computer is and the operating system that came with it...

This may help. Make sure all peripheral devices such as printers, scanners, etc. are turned off during the install process.

I had similar problems a couple of years ago - and found it was primarily the downloaded file. I got the Microsoft CD and it went in perfectly.

Genuine copy. Service pack from the CD or from the website?
Any POP blocker or Spam killer prevent you to move onto the next stage?

First, tommytran's link is a good starting point .. some pcs must have updates done to BIOS and Drivers
or SP2 will not work properly

Only other things I can suggest would be:

Use the Microsoft SP2 CD .. not the download .. ms will send you one in a few days .. just go to
the web site to request it
Also make sure your Antivirus is Disabled .. but disconnect from Internet while it is not Enabled
so baddies do not sneak in.

Installing SP2 onto a system that already has Malware causes problems, but I don't know if it could cause yours. Les
