Cannot install Office 2000 on WinXP prof.

Did you do a search on MS Knowledge Base? There were/are several items that I looked at when I did the MS Office install on 2000 and on XP.

I re-registered the Windows installer, because MSKB had a somewhat related article that I thought might work. Now gives me error: 1933, cannot update one or more windows protected files.

I can't find either error in the MSKB, when doing a search by number or exact text of the error message.

I saw that one but no, I don't have any office products on this pc yet. This is a fresh install with only Adobe Reader, Peachtree Accounting, and WinXP critical updates installed. BTW, this is an IBM PIII laptop with wireless connection, and thus far I haven't had any problems.

You're going to hate me, but I'll tell you a sure fire way to get it to install. I know this, because I too ran into all sorts of problems installing it on my XP box recently.

Format/reinstall XP. DO NOT INSTALL ANY CRITICAL UPDATES from windowsupdate.microsoft.com.

Install Office 2k. Download SR1 and install. Download SP2 and install.

Now install any updates from WindowsUpdate.

I did that and it worked perfectly, where as previously it was asking for an XP CD since it had to update some protected files. Then it told me my XP CD was bunk.

Thanks. You think I will have any problems simply removing the critical updates and then installing office. I don't want to reformat unless no other way.

try copying the entire CD to a folder on the hard drive and then running it that way. Thats the only way I could get office2k to install on my win2k machine. I kept getting a very similar error. Its worth a shot.

I didn't try that, as my install was still relatively fresh so it hadn't been completely customized yet.

It's worth a shot. If not, then you'll have to do the reformat/reinstall.

I also tried copying the CD to a folder before installing. No luck with that method either on this error.

This also worked for me. Plus if it needs to install anything else that it did not on the original install then it does so automatically without requiring the CD cause it's already on your hard drive.

Worked for me too.
