my friend been having problems lately on her system. i recently built it for her, she's running a AMD Athlon XP1800+ (SK-6 Heatsink w/ Sunon 24CFM) on a MSI K7T266 Pro2 mobo. anyways, her computer locks up randomly (more commonly when she uses AOL). yes i know everyone will reply with aol sucks and blah blah. i need a legimate reply about why this is so? the comp is definitely not being overheat, its running 40C->51C MAX, which i believe is not too close to any dangerous temps (ie 55C)....

thanks for any assistance
(and yes AOL sucks! =)

Install a monitoring program, MotherboardMonitor or the utility that came with the mobo, and check the voltages. If +5v is less than 4.8, power supply is not sufficient. Reseat the memory. Check for IRQ confilcts.

What os is she running? If it's XP, it won't work with older versions of AOL (which sucks :) ).

the +5.00V ticker the Motherboard Monitor program turned out to be okay, its running @ ~5.02V
so what else could it be? =[

EDIT:
im not sure if this is irregular, but her Core 0 shows 1.71V and Core 1 shows 1.23V
while on my stable computer its Core 0 shows 1.85V and Core 1 shows 2.69V....

EDIT #2:
OK, it seems the computer didn't like to work. It wouldn't boot up anymore, rarely goes to the POST screen. So I resetted the CMOS and it worked again at 100FSB!!!!!! At 100FSB, it did go to Windows just fine... But then when I went back to the BIOS and changed it to 133FSB, it wouldn't boot up at all again, and yes I had to reset the CMOS again. So right now, her comp is only running at 100FSB. I think it's the power supply, its a 300W Enlight PSU, and that PSU isn't on AMD's recommended PSU for XP1800+, its only recommended up to XP1700+, lucky me, eh?... any ideas?

DDR memory or SDRAM, if its SDRAM it might be 100 MHZ, and w/n overclock

Have you tried upgrading the bios?
This doesn't sound like a aol problem, if the computer doesn't post 133mhz then it might be a jumper or dipswitch that needs to be set, not sure cuase I am not to familiar with this board. It is a newer board, are you sure that the multiplyer is set right or to default?

I don't know what your Bios shows,
but check to see if it has a divider setting of some sort.
Make sure when your running at FSB 133mhz that the PCI & AGP
slots are still at the right mhz.

Will it do safe mode at 133?

no, if i change the fsb to 133mhz, the farthest the computer will go to is the POST and the video card bios screen and then blank out.

Is the RAM in the slot closest to the chipset?

Do you have the latest BIOS installed?

Try loading "Failsafe settings" in the BIOS and then reboot and try bumping the FSB up to 133MHz at that point.

One more thing, and this is a strange one:

I put together a MSI K7T266 Pro2 system for a friend with an XP1800+ and a GF3. I was a big pile of dog doo. I finally figured that it was the video card so I swapped in my GF2Ultra and it worked like a charm.

The strange part is, later my friend came over to check out his computer and I put the GF3 back in to show him how it was crashing. Well, it didn't crash anymore. I got frustrated and reinstalled the OS fresh again, and it still ran fine with the GF3. It's still running great to this day.

I know it wasn't just not seated correctly, because I pulled the dam card out about 10 times prior to trying the GF2Ultra.
