Cannot get to any websites. Help plzzz

WinXP Home ED.

I have run Spybot, CWShredder, Virus scan and removed anything found, but I still cannot get to any web sites via IE. Highjack This also looks ok.

Here's the strangest part. If I boot into Safe Mode with Networking, I can get on to the web. I can surf webpages and download updates.
I have also check the reg run keys and msconfig and removed anything that looks out of sort. Still no luck.

In normal mode I am able to ping a web sites url and ip address. But cannot get to the site via URL or Address in IE.

I'm up for any suggestions or ideas.

Check to see if WinXP's firewall is enabled, sometimes it can block way too much data from reaching your pc mainly through IE. I would disable it and go with a 3rd party firewall anyway.

Have you tried reinstalling IE? try getting from the MS site, if it does reinstall from there, there is another program called win xp manager (search on google, on www.majorgeeks.com I think) that will allow you to reinstall IE, otherwise try installed an IE enhancer over it, like MYIE2 (www.myie2.com), also have you tried any other browsers, like netscape, mozilla, or opera?

EDIT: Also check your connection settings for a proxy ( I think tools>internetoptions>connection tab)

check for programs blocking internet access from IE (uninstall all spy/ad/mal ware removers and firewalls temporarily)

edit2:
try installing the google toolbar in safe mode, and then go back to normal mode and type in the name of the site you want to go to in the toolbar (www.name.com > name) and if it works a google search screen should come with your results, click on the link in the results to the website you want to go to, temp fix

edit3:
type ctrl-alt-del to go to the task manager , and look for any suspicious processes, if you want post your list of processes running here

This morning when I get into work that was the next thing I am going to try. I have the IESetup.exe file on a CD and I am going to try and reiinstall IE from it.

I haven't tried other browsers like netscape or firefox but I may if reinstalling IE doesn't work.

I have checked the proxy setting and all it well.

I have also looked at the lmhost file and it ok too.

Are your DNS addresses right (check with your ISP)?

How 'bout your hosts file? Does it have any more than "localhost 127.0.0.1 "? If it does, are you aware of it?

I am the ISP and PC broke fix it + may other divisions of the IT profession.

Yes I have checked the host file. It is normal.

Do you have HiJackThis? If so please run it and post the log. DO NOT FIX ANYTHING with it yet... let me/us review it first. There are several viruses and hijackers out there that can do this.

What he said. It definately sounds like a winsock problem.. which are more common that you might expect.

If you wanted to manually do the fix just do the following:

Run "regedit"
Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
Close the Registry Editor
Go to Control Panel->Network Connections
Right click onto your NIC and select Properties
Click onto Install
Highlight Protocol and click onto Add
Click onto Have Disk
Specify the path of your INF folder (Default: C:\WINDOWS\inf) and then click onto OK - (Note: you may have to set your view to view all/hidden files)
That's it really, you shouldn't have to restart. If I missed a step, someone let me know.. I'm doing this from memory and I did a lot of drugs as a kid.

I finally fixed it.

Turns out there was an orphan .dll file from a pop up blocker program, that was uninstalled recently, that was blocking all websites.

I deleted the entry of this file from the registery, rebooted and all was fine.

Seems like a lot of people are having this same issue. I have read all the great responses and I am about to take a look at the same issue on an XP home edition notebook that can connect to the isp but can not bring up web pages through ie. How did you come to find an orphan dll?

I found it when I looked at the HiJack This list for about the 15th time. I was really looking at each line and determining what exactly everything was doing. I got down to a line that showed an install folder of Program Files/"some pop up bocking program"... I looked at my Task Bar and noticed there was no icon running for this program, there was one however for Panicware's Free Pop-Up Stopper. I thought, what the hey, and removed that entry. And once doing so I could view webpages.
