2 machines and 8 port hub-cat 5. Win 98 on one machine 98se on other machine. Machines will see themself but not each other
Link lights on hub are on. Different computer names on both machines - workgroup same on both machines - one machine called PC-A the other one server - IP address for machine 1 1.192.168.0.1 machine 2 same except last No. which is 2.
All protocals installed using tcp/ip. The only thing that I see different is that in tcp/ip properties - advanced one machine has (property none value present) other machine has (allow binding to ATM value no) Any advice? Or a help site for networking. I dont frame my questions very good sometimes.
Forgot - file and printer shareing are enabled

are you meaning to say that the IP addresses you have are 1.192.168.0.1 ? If so I dont know how you set that but try 192.168.0.x (x being a number between 1 and 255) also try using DHCP instead of assiging a number.
can you ping the boxes? try "ping 127.0.0.1" to ping yourself and "ping 192.168.0.2" from your server to your other box if thats the ip number you assigned it.
one other thing try enabling NETbeui it's a lot simpler that tcp/ip
let me know how it goes!

See!pretty stupid of me, the first 1 for the IP address is a brainfade. It really wasen't on there, I was reading from my notes.
If I enable DHCP should I remove the IP addresses from the address screen? If I install netbui do I have to bind that to my network card? Tried the ping but the machine does not seem to see itself. The DOS screen goes by so quickley I cannot read it. What I did was use the instructions I found on homepclan website as I know nothing about networking.

I dont know what happened but I pinged again and got a response from both machines both ways and both are showing up in network neighborhood. Maybe it just took a long time for the machines to see each other I done a f5 about 45 minutes ago maybe just took a while.

lets do this step by step.
server---
1) how do you connect to the net? modem or dsl/cable?
if modem you should have only your dial up adapter and NIC card listed as network devices in networkk properties. you should have 2 NIC cards if you use cable/dsl
remove anything else

2)remove everything except netBEUI we can add tcp/ip later. make sure your nic card/cards are bound to it

box 1--
same thing

don't use tcp/ip yet

what do you mean the DOS screen goes by too fast? to ping something just goto "start->programs->MS-DOS prompt"

Ok I am with you so far.
Last things first--I pinged by just going to start - run - typed in ping 192.168.0.1 which is the other machine. Went to the other machine and did the same. Machines pinged each other ok and now I can see both machines in my network neighborhood.
As to the internet link I am using a modem right now so I am going to install ICS from win98se. I have 4 machines that crack rc5 and am using a kvm switch and seperate modems. I want to get every thing up and running when the DSL arrives I thought I could just plug it into the uplink on the hub. Really appriciate the time you are giving me.

Well it worked for about 15 minutes. now 1 of my machines sees itself and the other machine but cannot ping it. The other machine will only see itself. I think maybe my hub is Kaput even though it is new. I will get a crossover cable tommorrow and see if that helps. Bed time now it is about 3:00 AM so nighty night.

One potential problem I can see:

You cannot plug a DSL connection directly into the uplink port on your hub, you either have to buy a DSL router to share the connection, or install two NICs in one machine and run the DSL connection to the second NIC. Then either use ICS (Which is a bit lame due to lack of configuration options) or get a program like Winproxy. Actually I just read a post where a guy said he uses Analogxproxy, which if it's like any other Analog X program I've seen, it's free. Winproxy isn't. Go to analog x's site to find it. Good luck!

P.S. The reason that you couldn't see the ping when you did it is because you were running the ping command directly from the Run line from the start menu. Another way to do it so the screen will stay up after you have pinged something is to go to Start, Programs, MS-DOS prompt and run it there. Or type in "command" on the run line for win9X, "cmd" on the run line for NT/2000. LATER!

Thanks all:
Well I dont know why but cannot get the networking thing to work. I had a couple of machines networked a couple of years ago and had no problem.
I put in about 9 hours yesterday and a couple today and finally gave up. I got the machines to ping each other a couple of times and then it quit. Looked at the analogue X, I downloaded it just in case I ever get the network running.
Thanks again

I'm no networking expert. I have a current post here in this forum where I also admit this. However, this worked for me on a stubborn setup recently.

In properties for Network Neighborhood, remove every entry related to your NIC. Do not remove any entries having to do with Dial-Up Adapter, AOL adapter, or the like. Only entries that list your network card. Reboot. You will be prompted for the drivers for your card and most likely the Windows CD.

Do this on both machines in this case because you are unsure of which is giving you the problems. Set everything back up as before.

Sometimes even though everything looks to be alright, in reality it's not. This will clear up any problems.

From my personal experience, I have been unable to get a network setup using NetBEUI on Win98. I struggled for many hours one day, finally tried TCP/IP and it took right off.

All:
Firstly boomerang: You know one heck of a lot more than I do. I read your post last night.
I misread one of the posts above and removed almost everything in Networking and then my machine would not connect to the net, took me 3 hours this afternoon figuring that one out. It is funny in a way, I have built a lot of machines and have not had that much trouble but this networking thing really has me bugged. I am going to think on it a day or so and give it another go. After so much time it I start running in circles. :)
