Cannot enable bidirectional printing

I just installed an old printer on a new computer using USB to paralled port converter. When I send a job to the printer, all it does is to start blinking followed by an error message. Someone told me to enable bidirectional printing under the Ports tab in printer properties. However, this option is greyed out and hence, I cannot check (enable) it. Is this because the printer driver doesn't support it? I checked the bios setup and there was nothing there I could play with. Anything to do with XP?
