cannot do anything in XP

When XP boots up messenger comes up and a couple of things that say have errors but then everything that i click on doesnot open. it shows the hourglass and thenit dissapears and nothing happens.
I took the harddrive out and put it in anouther computer and ran AVG and got rid of 934 probs then ran a trojanb remover and removed a further 100 or so probs. i also ran adaware and it removed 200 or so probs yet still the same prob.
What do i do does anyone know
