cannot display scaled 1280x1024

My screen (on an Acer TravelMate 8100) cannot display 1280x1024 in scaled mode -- only in 1:1 mode. The screen will go black, and then green colors (sorta looks like a gas) will move in towards the center of the screen from the edges. Eventually the screen turns a very dark shade of gray. I know I could just set it at 1:1 and there wont be much of a difference since the vertical res is so close to the native's, but going into my card's settings and the various submenus to change it and change it back again is a pain for the relatively few games I'd do it for.

Anyone have this happen to them? It seems like a very strange issue.
