Cannot directly open .zip files from IE6

Hi,
whenever I click on a .zip file from IE6, the download window pops up, but the "Open" button is disabled... I can only "Save as...", "Cancel" or "More info"

However when the file is downloaded, I can "Open", "Open Folder" or "Close" as usual

I tried with .rar and .exe and they are okay... it seems like it's only doing that with .zip files

How can I fix this?

i dont think you should be able to open a .zip from a server. that would mean you would be able to open a .zip on the server and expand it. actually i dont know why you would be able to open a .rar on a server either. a .exe should be fine because youre just executing it from where it is on the server, not uncompressing it.

no i think you dont understand

when you click "Open", it downloads the file and runs it automaticly on your computer..... you cannot run a program on the server.....

Do you install the latest IE 6.0 security patches? Microsoft added this "feature" to their latest security patch because of the flaw in which webserver admins where able to fake application header information to make a file that ended in .exe look like it was a zip. So if you ran it from its currently location you would run the exe. As far as I can tell there is no way to bring the function back without re-installing IE 6.0.

If you haven't installed the latest IE 6.0 patches then I have no idea why you are having this problem.

Ahhhh that would explain a lot of things, thanks man!

do you have any references for this... I'd like to read more about it?
