Cannot connect to Internet with new Internet connection

Hello all-

Earlier today a Comcast technician came by and installed a new cable modem as part of the triple play package my family bought. I currently use a D-Link switch (gigabit and the 'earth friendly' edition) to connect to two Vista PCs (one is Vista Home Premium and the other Vista Ultimate) to the Internet.

When the router was first installed, the Home Premium PC was used to verify the connection was working. However after the technician left, I swapped the cable from the Vista Home Premium PC with the cable to the D-Link switch. The Vista Home Premium PC still has an Internet connection but the Vista Ultimate PC does not.

I have tried:

-resetting the IP address
-flushing the DNS cache
-swapping cables

I am not sure what's going on. I don't know if Comcast only allows one PC to be connected nowadays or if my D-Link switch is going bad. The only thing I haven't tried yet is to switch the workgroup and see if that works.

Any help that can be provided will be greatly appreciated.
 
The cable modem is an Arris model: TM602G/CT (never heard of this brand before). The switch is a D-Link DGS-2208. The way it's all set up is the switch is connected directly to the modem and the two computers are connected to the switch. There's really no network setup other than the two computers are sharing the Internet connection.

If the Aris is Not also a Router then you need a Router when using more than one computer.

If the Aris is a Router But can only provide one IP it might be a problem.

What the IP address of the computer that can use the Aris is, while it is working on the Internet?
 
OP, you need a ROUTER connected to your cable modem, not a switch. Comcast will only give you one IP address which is obvious as only one of your computers has internet. Get a router, and then power cycle the modem and all should be good for you.

Just did a little research on this as I've been considering going with VOIP with Comcast. I would end up with this modem I assume.

These modems have a battery backup to keep a dial tone in case of power failure. They do not reset like a typical modem. Removing power to it does not reset it. There is a reset button on the modem that must be used. Just an FYI.
 
JackMDS: I did notice something when I was looking up the IPs for both computers, and the computer that cannot connect to the Aris modem has an IP of 169.254.xxx.xxx. Not sure if that is significant or not.

kevnich2: I did have a wireless router at one point, but now it seems to refuse to work (haven't used this router in two years since i made the switch (no pun intended) to wired networking. That two year time included a stint with Comcast (in which I never used a router with multiple computers). I simply plugged the modem connection directly into the switch and then the multiple computers plugged into the switch. It worked then...oh well. I've ordered a new router and will see if that works or not.
 
Comcast tech support won't provide any trouble-shooting support for a router not provided by them.
Basically, what Brainonska511 is correct: you'll need to clone the working MAC address onto the router.
Alternatively, you could call Comcast and provide them the router's native MAC address.
Then Comcast's network will recognize and enable the router as one single IP address, even though you might have 2 or more different PC's connected to the router.
