Cannot connect to computer via VNC

I am at work and I am able to remote desktop into my computer without a problem, but I cannot seem to get VNC to work. I am using RealVNC as both the host and the client.

I am using a dynamic DNS service, and it is working because I can use it for remote desktop. The port for VNC is set to 5900, so I have forwarded it in my router the same way I forwarded 3389 for remote desktop.

When I try to connect via VNC, I get the error message "unable to connect to host: Connection refused (10061)".

I am not currently using a firewall and also am not on my router. I previously tried different ports last week when I was fiddling with it but I don't remember which ones off hand.

Any advice as to what else I should try? Thank you very very much!!

Can you access the VNC server from within your home network? (use another computer on your home network to try to vnc to the server's internal IP address) Which version of windows are you using? Double check your settings, in order for port forwarding to work you MUST have set static internal ip addresses on the computers that you wish to port forward to, and this IP must be the ip that you typed into your router's configuration page for port forwarding.

I was able to use VNC within my home network before I reformatted. However, I had never tried to access it from outside the network before then, and have not tried within the network since I have reformatted. I will try and make a point to confirm that it works that way today. I assume that it will.

I have static internal IP addresses working. I was able to port forward 3389 without a problem to access remote desktop, which works flawlessly.

Can I use any port for VNC? Maybe this port (5900) is blocked on my work network or through my ISP? What other ports should I try? Could I use 3389 since I know it works for remote desktop?

I'm sorry but do you mean open it through a firewall or...?

BTW, I think I forgot to mention that I am able to use VNC from my work to log into a server that we use for verifying information, resetting passwords etc (it is on another network that requires a VPN connection).

BTW, another thing. In the system tray on my computer that I am trying to remote into, it says:

VNC Server (Service): Not accepting connections

Is there some setting that I have missed that needs to be enabled to get it to work?

yes it looks like you pry need to setup a password or something. ALso ya open that port range to the server at your work on your router at work.

Well I am already able to VNC here from work to a different server. I don't have rights to change that also. How can I tell what port I am using to remote to the other computer using VNC that works? I assume it would be the same?

Password is setup and forwarded 5800-5900. Still same connection refused error.
