Cannot Boot from Hard Drive...

Hi Guys,

I need some help here. I am trying to replace a dying 2.1GB Maxtor hard drive in an old P166 system with a newer 4.3GB Quantum lct08 drive. The system boots up just fine off the old drive as well as every bootable floppy I have, but it refuses to boot from the new Quantum drive! It doesn't matter what I have on the drive whether it's completely empty from a clean format, or made bootable with a FORMAT /S command, same problem! It makes it past POST and looks like it's booting just fine, but rather than displaying "Starting Windows 98..." or "Invalid System Disk" or anything, it just hangs!

I have no idea what might be cuasing this, nor how to fix it...any thoughts? Something wrong with the MBR? Should I try a low-level format perhaps?

Thanks guys!

Wow, you are fast! 🙂

Yes, I set the partition to be active. Upon further reading on Quantum's website, I am going to try reconstructing the MBR with FDISK tomorrow. I'll let you know if it works...
