Another vote for the A95. It was one of the ones I was considering a few months back when I was researching my camera purchase.

Edit: Be ready for Ornery to come in here and tell you that both of your options are crap. Whenever he wakes up, that is. 😛

Ornery makes a stronger case b/c he provides links to back him up, but he is right...nothing can come close to Sony's V1 in that price range.

I'm not saying he's necessarily wrong in what he's trying to say, but it's just somewhat amusing to me that he responds to each camera thread in exactly the same way without fail. 😛

I think its b/c there are so many camera threads, and they are basically asking the same thing, which camera to get? Alot people go to canon right away...they are nice cameras, very popular. People brush sony aside b/c of their memory stick, while way back when were much more expensive, are comprable to other memory standards in price. The V1 used to be a $500 camera when it first came out, and it is worth it for $500. The simple fact that you can get a new, unopened one from reputable resellers without having to sift through the scum of ebay to get a good price on it is a steal.

according to this website, the camera is pretty good. But i don't want to spent more money on the memory stick. I already have 2 512MB compact flash. I do have 2 memory stick but it's only 8MB and 64 each.

Also check out image-source and steve's digicams for 2 more reviews. Having a gig of CF already puts ya in a tight position and the logical thing would be to get a camara that takes CF. I personally would sell the CF cards and buy some MS sticks and get the V1. You will not regret it....of course, that is just my opinion. 😉 😛

LMK find a link for ya, 1 sec.

Disagree. Canon still makes better camera than Sony. I am using Sony P150 now, it's brilliant...but Canon's comparative models are still better than Sony's.

I dunno how you can say that. Canon has nothing that can compare to the F707/717 except the G5/G6 which both came out how many more months after Sony's?

For $300, canon's A series or Elph series cant compare in quality to the V1

Go to dpreview or steve's, most people would agree that (although Sony is getting closer) Canon makes the better imaging chip. My opinion: Go with Canon.

OVERALL, yes. Sony has made and is still making some pretty sh!tty cameras in their line up. Sony's discontinued models(S70, S85, f707, f717, V1) are giving everything on the market today a run for their money and have better quaility IMO.

And you get a lot of people who bitch about sony memory sticks b/c they would rather compromise quality than pay $5 for a different memory card.

V1 is not competing with the SXXX or SDXXX series. V1 is more in the G5, G6 market. I would consider P100/150 to be the direct competitors to S500 or SDXXX, and from my experience, Canon makes better camera in this market.

I was going by price mainly. Im not too keen on the new sonys(p100/150), so I really don't know how they compare. If you think the V1 is in the same market as the G series(I can see how it is) that just compliments the V1 even more. For $300, WHY not buy something comprable to Canons top of the line?(excluding dslr)

Well, if my memory serves me justice, V1 came out when G3 was still in the market. I think you can get a G3 for $3xx these days if it's still available...which doubt. So V1 is better because it's still available in small quality whereas G3 is pretty much non-existed in the market.

Both the V1 and G5 were released in the Summer of 2003. I can't remember if the G3 was still on the market then. IMO, I think the V1 takes better pictures than the G3 did...so even if the G3 was $3xx.xx I think the V1 is a steal @ $299.

Not trying to deny V1 is a great camera. But sometimes Sony's stupidity just bothers me. (not saying Canon doesn't) Small things like deleting pics, just too many bottons to press to delete a pic. And manual control...why bother to give me manual control when only two apertures setting are available? And why gives me manual focus when there are only 1m, 3m, 7m, and infinity to choose from? It's like Sony gets sooooooooooooooooooooooooo close to perfect camera, and yet...everything fails.

If you look at this review it is compared to the G5.

Edit: Fixed link

Between the A95 and S500, A95. It has the bigger sensor.

If you through the V1 in their, then V1.

This is assuming you don't care about size, ergonomics, etc.

And picking a camera because of memory format is not a good idea, considering how much memory costs these days.

I dont get why people look at reviews and go on what others say.

There are gagillions of pictures out there jsut go lookyourself.

I use 1 picture taken by steves-digicams everytime to compares pictures. And once again Cannon comes out on top its the M&M guy. look for yourselves.

the 2 main things I always look at are the ridges on top of the spray can, and the gradation of the RED color on the M&M candy guy. The cannon just looks better to me...
