Canker sores

It's not chocolate, it's not SLS, it's not lack of tooth brushing, it's not related to lack of Listerine use, it's not spicy foods (I don't eat anything remotely spicy), salt water just makes them burn like hell, multivitamins don't help, citrus fruits (either eating a lot of them or none at all) have no effect, stress is irrelevant, and so on.

The worst time were the years when I had braces. It was like one large ulcer everywhere the braces touched the inside of my mouth. Add that to the constant headache of the braces themselves.....god those years were lousy. I'm just glad benzocaine gels exist. They never make the pain go away completely, but they do at least dull it a bit.


The ONLY thing that seems to make them go away is time, and it usually takes about 2 weeks for mine to heal completely.

so it was tissue abrasion, like i've stated which is also a cause. you get a small cut, gash, on the tissue and it can erupt into an aphthous ulcer just like that.

i agree, that time is the only thing that will make them go away. you can get numbing agents to put on them, but they don't really do much of anything or at least for any extended period of time.

Well yeah, it's tissue abrasion that starts it, but why? I get papercuts and they don't turn into open sores, they just heal in a day or so. So while the minor abrasion is what starts the process going, the underlying cause of the resulting ulcer is the part which seems to remain a mystery.

agreed. it's an auto immune response. for some reason your body attacks itself and this ulcer is created that takes 2 weeks to heal. it remains a mystery.
 
I get them after I bite my lip when chewing. I use a lot of listerine-knockoff mouthwash, and canker-aid, which puts a slight film over it to heal better (works so-so...better than nothing.)

Some people are very susceptible to them for some reason, and they are like migraines - if you find something that helps you get over them, you're very fortunate.

If I accidentally bite my cheek, I'll post likely end up with a canker sore. Ugh.

Recovering from two massive canker sores right now. I bit myself twice near the same area, and then they sorta got big and fused into one super canker sore.

And then there's the preemptive attacks, on places like my gums where I can't possibly bite.

Is that a definite thing, like as in, do they know it's an autoimmune response, or is that just one of many hypotheses as to their cause?

The rest of my questions would probably be answered if I had a degree in medicine or something like it - like why would the body stop there if it's an autoimmune response? Why create a smoking, painful crater of a battle zone and then just stop? Or do they adopt a scorched-earth policy? "Injury detected! Carpet bomb the entire area! Leave no witnesses!"

I'm not convinced that herpes can't be a factor.

For instance, my wife had never had a cold sore until I (while drunk) kissed her with a canker sore right inside my lip. Within one day she had a cold sore in the exact spot the canker sore would have rubbed. I hadn't had a cold sore in 5 or more years before that either, so it had to have been from the ulcer.

To this day I still apologize for giving her the herp.

Small ones don't hurt too bad, but if it's like 1cm in diameter or bigger, it hurts soooooooooooooooooooo bad. I can't eat. Eventually I ended up putting benzocaine on it, and then using salt, not even salt water. I still have a scar, but it helped ease the pain for a few hours. Yea... salt helped ease the pain for only a few hours. I've found that it doesn't work on larger ones, but on smaller ones, salt will increase healing quite dramatically. The large one left a scar though. Small tiny line bump I can still feel.

There are treatments for the larger ones, involving sulfuric acid....

I've had some luck cauterizing small ones with a styptic pencil.

Some will prescribe heavy doses of cyanide. Usually no canker sore worries after that. Or, hell.......ANY worries for that matter cuz....YER DEAD!!!!!!!!
