So selling the tavern might take too long. Well he already wasted a month since winning the lotto, and I'm sure he could've started the process a few months ago.
This was my main problem with the story too. I'm sure if he sold the tavern at a reduced price, he could get it sold sooner. Combining the two sources of money, he's surely have enough or close enough that he could get the treatment. I think this guy wants to get the treatment and still be rich afterward if he lives.
That and the fact that he gave himself lung cancer by smoking makes me decidedly unsympathetic.
