I just went through the terms and it nowhere states there will be a termination fee. Just that there MIGHT be one:

This authorization will remain valid until 30 days after we receive written notice from you terminating our authority to charge your credit or debit card, whereupon we will charge your credit or debit card for the termination fee, if applicable, and any other outstanding charges and terminate your Service.

2. SERVICE
2.1 (a) Monthly Term. Service is offered on a monthly basis for a term that begins on the date that Vonage activates your Service and ends on the day before the same date in the following month. Subsequent terms of this Agreement automatically renew on a monthly basis unless you give us written notice of non-renewal at least ten (10) days before the end of the monthly term in which the notice is given. You are purchasing the Service for full monthly terms, meaning that if you attempt to terminate Service prior to the end of a monthly term, you will be responsible for the full month's charges to the end of the then-current term, including, without limitation, unbilled charges, plus a termination fee, if applicable, all of which will immediately become due and payable. You will also be responsible for the next full month's charges in the event that you do not provide the requisite ten-day notice of termination prior to the expiration of the then-current term. Expiration of the term or termination of Service will not excuse you from paying all accrued and unpaid charges due under this Agreement. Notwithstanding the foregoing, if you terminate Vonage service after the Money Back Guarantee period, but within the first twelve months, Vonage charges a termination fee of $39.99 per line.

3.6 Termination Fee (Does Not Apply to Business Plus Customers). You will be charged a termination fee of $39.99 per voice line if your Service is terminated for any reason after the Money Back Guarantee period and within the first year following the activation of your Service.

Let 'em sue me for it then. :|

That attitude will get you in serious credit trouble.

It is a PITA, but you did agree to it. You have absolutely no grounds to refuse to pay, and they have every reason to try to collect it.

Consider it a $40 lesson, don't let it be any more than that.

UPDATE 2/27

This is REDICULOUS!!!

They refuse to cancel via email.

Top it off, they've locked the mac address of my router to my account. So the guy I sold it to can't register it with them. I call tech support and they say they can't release the mac address until I cancel my account. ARRRGGGHHHH!!!! I asked what if I bought a new router and sold my old one, would the old one be useless because I still have an account? I was told yes by my friend in India.

He gave me a different phone number to the account management department to cancel, and it just goes to the same place as the other numbers.

This is FREAKING REDICULOUS!!!!

Call and keep pressing 0.

Well I got general support and they can't do it. Only the account managers.

keep asking for the right person or a higher up, immediatly.
Threaten to cancel (which you';re going to anyway) that usually gets them moving a bit.

Doesn't do much when the tech monkeys are in India. The buyer of my router (a board member btw) called and went through supervisors and kept getting hung up on.

I'm sitting on hold all day if necessary now.

So spoof the MAC address, it's not that hard...

/edit: wait, it's a router, not a NIC, that complicates matters.

OH MY FSCKING GAWD!!!!

I finally got an answer! The sound of somebody eating a FSCKING CRACKER then they hung up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Durock, did you even tell them what I told you to say?

Yeah. Here's the response:
We understand from your email that you have issues with the
termination proces. we request you to contact our account manager at
our toll free nunber 1-866-243-4357 for terminating your account. this
is because we dont have the rights to terminatate customers account by
a email request.we are very sorry for that and request your pardon.

Vonage customer support is absolutely horrible, I'll vouch for that.

By far the most unprofessional, poorly trained, and generally incompetent phone jockeys I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with.

usually they want cancellations in writing... but it is crap that you can usually sign up online so easily and can't do the opposite just the same.

Ok, I just got through again (this must be a record!!! 20 minutes!) Cancelled. Done. Finis.

The account manager, who says his name is "Walker" (if his name's Walker, my name is Paris Hilton), also in India, says the WLAN mac address should be immediately available to register. We'll see...

Anyway you think you had phone probs, try this one on for size:

Ah the early days of DSL.......back in June of 2000 I moved from an apartment that I had SBC install DSL from the initial roll out.

At my new place I had DSL installed. Even though I cancelled the service before I moved they continued to double bill me for two dsl lines for six months while I was transferred all around the country - INCLUDING CANADA AND INDIA . I spent about SIXTY HOURS on the phone all together fighting with them while the unpaid amounts grew and grew. I was looking at an $800 phone bill towards the end.

Finally after spending the usual two hours on hold, being transferred, reexplaining the story from scratch for the 9,000,000,000th time, someone had "mercy" on me and wrote the bill down by $750. But she warned me that they could come back later and readd it at anytime. Six years later no such luck. But Im thinking, "WTF - Youre making me pay for two lines when I only have one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You damn, dirty, good for nothing bastages! Ive spent sixty mother fsking hours going round and round with you guys and you finally have 'mercy' on me!!!??!?!@?!?!!! You might readd the charges??!?!?#$?!?!@?!~?@!~!!@@@@##"

Im mad just thinking about it again.

Update 2/28

I got this from the buyer of my router:

i spoke to vonage, they confirmed the MAC address of xxxxxx for you wireless WRT54GP2 router is deactivated, there telling me i have to wait 60 days before it can be re-activated. i'm not mad at you, i think the people at vonage are a bunch of morons. tomorrow, i'm calling vonage hq in NJ and file a complaint with them.

This is after my man "Walker" said the mac would be available immediately.

God this is pathetic. I used to tell everybody to use Vonage. Never EVER again. The link to this thread is in all my sigs now. :|
