I've been thinking about doing it too. My roommate and I end up watching only 3-4 channels - ESPN, FOX, and Comedy Central come to mind. I'd rather pay $20 for 3-4 good channels than $65 for 150 retarded channels. That's about $500/year I could save. Once I get my own apartment I'll probably just cut cable tv completely as I don't find that much time to watch it.

can you get the OTA HD channels with a regular antenna, or do you need a special hd antenna?

Most UHF antennas will work, but I'm not certain how signal quality will be.

But, if the consumers band together and enough of us cancel, we can get it. Too bad I'm not an organizer.

I would totally get TV if you could do that.
Also I forgot to say that I heard that people with TV's in the bedroom statistically have less sex. Of course it might not necessarily be because of the TV, other factors could be involved but whatever I'm still not putting a TV in my bedroom ever.
In fact maybe that's subconsciously why I don't want TV in any room of the house.:D

Dang, I got them to give me a discount for 12 month. It actually just expired so I need to "plan to switch to satellite" again.

Good. Now you might want to through your TV out the window (Mr. Natural's advice).

All the above are OTA broadcasts, so rabbit ears will catch 'em. OTOH, Battlestar Galactica . . .

I would cancel it if I paid for it (instead of my parents).

If I wanted to watch the Super Bowl or whatever, I'd watch it with friends at someone else's house. Otherwise, I only watch TV when I'm really sick or have absolutely nothing else to do (which is almost never).

My wife and I canceled cable about 4 months ago. Can't say we've missed it yet. But we kept the local channels thru our cable provider. The cable box is also an HD DVR. So we pay $14 for the basic channels (2-26) and $14.99 for the HD DVR and $6.99 + taxes for HD service and we get all networks in HD (except CW) and ESPN HD, DISC HD, HDNET and HDMovies for around $44/mo. Our cable bill used to be over $130 for cable+internet bundled. Now we have basic tv with DVR for $44 and 5mb/1mb cable internet for $39.99, so a total of around $85/mo, saving us about $540/yr.

I don't miss any of the cable channels at all, my wife only complains about nothing being on late at night (I am content watching leno/conan, but she is not).

lol, I just reduced my cable today to analog and cancelled HBO. My wife was kinda upset because she wanted to wait until football was over. We lost the NFL channel, and watch Inside the NFL every week.

I travelled for 3 months and had no TV. It was fantastic, I got to do a lot of reading which makes you smarter instead of just numbing your brain for a few hours like cable does. Then I came back and worked for the cable company. I would get off work at around 6:30 and my platinum package cable service would be waiting for me. For 3 months I lived, breathe, ate, drank, and crapped cable television. After I quit I found it was a relief to be rid of it because all it does is eat up hours of your life without any benefit.

Now when I go to college I'll probably have cable TV where I'm living. Regardless, I'm leaving my TV at my parents house. Those things are the devil!

If we cancelled our cable internet, HD cable and cell phone service we'd save $200 per month!

Plus cable HD channels seem to be compressed. OTA channels aren't.

Haven't had cable, satellite, etc., for 7-8 years...can't say that I miss it. The big benefit is that I no longer have to participate in the obligatory and completely meaningless conversations that start with "So, didja watch Survivor/24/Simpsons/etc last night???....
